「Sign 'O' the Times」で早くも第二展開を昇華させてしまったプリンス。そこで、この「Black Album」である。しかし、このアルバムは諸事情で正式には発売されなかった。

「Black Album」は先人へのリスペクトとオマージュに満ち溢れている。スライ・ストーン、ジョージ・クリントン、ジミ・ヘンドリックス…6などタイトルからしてパーラメント／ファンカデリック風。しかし、しっかりとプリンスである。

プリンスはここからどこへ行こうとしていたのか…。この先のプリンスを見たかった。

ちなみに、当時は海賊版が大量にでまわり日本でも比較的簡単に入手できた。その後、こっそり正式発売されたが、当時より入手しづらい気がする…。

Princeの最高傑作はこの"Black Album"です。断言いたします。
ただし、ブートレッグとして発売されたので、一般には入手しずらく、
評価もそれなりにマニア向けになってしまうのは致し方ないと思うのですが、
それでも息をもつかせぬ完璧な楽曲が次から次へと展開する様は、
さすが殿下と言うよりほかありません。
同時期の兄弟アルバム"Lovesexy"がポジティブなイメージを放つのに比べ、
確かにこの作品は陰のイメージを持っていますが、だからこそ
ユニセクシュアルな魅力を放っていたPrinceのファンクが
体に染み渡る名盤です。
殿下が好きな人は、高いかもしれませんが、Warnerから発売された
正規盤をぜひ入手してください。
生涯の愛聴盤になること請け合いです。

全部で8曲だが実際はぶっ続けで演奏される。音的には同時期の『Sign 'O' The Times』と同じでるべきなのだろうが、さにあらん（●＾o＾●）、もっと凄くファンクである。なんとなく、ワーナーとの確執をエネルギーに変えたりしている感は否めないプリンスだが、より自由気ままにこの天才を製作にあたらしたらいったいどれだけのものを作ってしまうのか、と思ってしまう。否、抑圧があり邪魔がはいるからより燃え上がって製作するのか、何しろ人には難しいと思われることをカンタンかつあっという間に完成させてしまう凄さが、このアルバムには滲み出ている。

もしかしてもっともっとお蔵入りになっている音源がワーナーのおかげでいっぱいある気がする（●＾o＾●）。最近では会員向けインターネット専門みたいになりつつあるプリンスだが、産み出した創造物は計り知れない価値だ。

プリンス・ファンは絶対に手に入れるべき『宿命』の一枚である。（●＾o＾●）
