Album Details

Reissue of the industrial outfits 1988, their first real commercial breakthrough (it reached #164 on the Billboard Top 200) after dabbling in synth pop during the beginning and middle of the 80s. Led by Al Jourgensen, this rougher, tougher almost metallic version of Ministry opened the doors for other industrial bands including Nine Inch Nails.

今やドラッグ所持＆スラッシュ・メタルの帝王と化してしまった彼ら。AL JOURZENSEN(HYPO LUXA）とPAUL BAKER（HERMES PAN）。このアルバムの頃の様な創作意欲と刺激、衝撃は現在の彼らには感じられなくなってしまいましたね。このアルバムは初期からエレポップ→ジャンク・ファンクへとスタイルを進化させていった彼らが最初にたどり着いた場所。通算３枚目のアルバムです。カオスと暴力に彩られた限りなく不毛な、まるで世紀末の情景を切り取ったかの様な凄まじいエレクトロニック・ノイズと暴力的な激し過ぎるギターが迫り来る狂気混沌に満たされた、強迫観念に裏打ちされた悪夢の様な世界でありました。アルバム全曲、息つく暇も無い程のスピード（スラッシュ・メタルのそれとは異質の）で迫るジャンク音塊は衝撃以外の何が残るでしょうか？ところが彼らは、それらの、ともすれば垂れ流しになってしまいがちなサウンドを緻密ちよい感性を媒介とした音響構築でもって表現し、情緒のかけらも無い、草木の一本も生えていない不毛な、しかしながら明らかに人間の血の通った世界を形成しています。今聴いても凄まじいインパクトと恐怖さえ感じさせる作品です。もの凄い世界がここにあります。

前作でエレクトリックボディビートを極めてみせたミニストリーだが、
今作からはベーシストのポールパーカーが加入、
さらなる変化を遂げおそろしく凶暴なサウンドを作り出してみせた。

アルバム前半曲ではKILLING JOKEを彷彿とさせるザクザクとした
ギターサウンドを大胆に導入。図太く、マシンガンのような連射を

繰り出すビート、荒々しいヴォーカルと相まって
すさまじく暴力的で荒涼としたサウンドを聴かせてくれる。
特に「STIGMATA」の破壊力は絶大で、
後にメタル/ハードコアバンドのSODにカバーされることになった。

中盤では前作のエレクトリックボディビート路線の楽曲に
妖しさと狂気を加えて発展させたような楽曲を披露。

後半ではビートが速度を増し、焦燥感と疾走感で一気に駆け抜ける。

次作以降のスラッシュメタル的サウンドももちろんいいのだが、
私的には今作での無駄のないサウンド、溢れる狂気の方が好きだ。
まさにオルタナティブな作品と言い切れる大傑作。

インダストリアル・メタルの元祖と言われる作品です。
最初の3曲は非常にハイスピードでパンキッシュですが、
それ以降の曲は非常にマニアックで狂気に満ちた音使いになってます。
1.のトリッキーな構成もスゴくカッコイイですが、
私はシンプルで研ぎ澄まされた2.がかなりのお気に入りです。
(ちなみにこの2曲、LIVEで聴くとカッコ良さの次元が変わってます。
→Live版 In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Upなどの音源から）

この頃からMINISTRYは打ち込みから生への変化を見せていたのだと思います。
4.以降、荒れ狂うノイズの嵐に金属的で重苦しいビート、発狂したようなVoが響き非常に怖いです。
特に6.や8.は特にVoの怖さが尋常じゃないです。
アルバム全体で見るとインダストリアル・メタルという印象だけではなく、
ハードかつダークなノイズ・ボディ・ミュージックという感じもします。
