　イギリスのロック・バンド、マリリオンが1994年に発表したコンセプト・アルバム。柔らかい中に芯の強さを備えた２代目ヴォーカル：スティーヴ・ホガース加入後を「後期」と呼ぶのだが、これはその後期の代表作である。

　イギリスの高速道路「M4」の橋の下で記憶を失い、錯乱した少女が発見された。この少女の情報を求めるラジオ放送を運転中に聞いたSteve Hogarth(vo)は、非常にショックを受けたと言う。「一体、今の社会で何が起きているのだろう？」そうしてこの実話を元に彼は詞を書き始めた…。初めは２~３曲のつもりだったそうだが、書いていくうちに、それはアルバム全体に及ぶ壮大な叙情詩となって行く。

　「無味乾燥なTV、垂れ流しの化学物質、学校ではいつも型に押し込まれていた…そんな世の中に慣れなくては！」と歌う "Living with the Big Lie"、「家に連れ戻された時、泣いたかい？　逃亡者…仕方ないね」と歌う "Runaway"、徐々に自分を失って壊れていく主人公の叫びを「Tell me I'm mad!」という言葉に込めた12分の大作 "Goodbye to All That" など、現代的なタッチのメロディーと、絡み合う効果音の中、シリアスかつ悲痛な詞が駆けめぐる。

　終盤、"The Great Escape" で逃避行のクライマックスを迎えたストーリーは、最後に "Made Again"（＝生まれ変わる）で、ひとつの「救い」に到達する。アルバム中唯一の優しいナンバーであるこの "Made Again" のメロディーはとても美しく、主人公は朝の光の中で「希望」という新しい自分を見出すのだ。

　現代社会を「音楽」で見事に表現しきった素晴らしい作品で、自分はこれを超すアルバムは出てこないのではないか？　とさえ思っている。番組の主題歌や、CM音楽には全く使えないタイプの音楽であるが、これがヒットチャートのトップ10に食い込んでくる所に、イギリスのシーンの奥深さを感じる。

　詞も、メロディーも、アレンジも、どこから聞いても素晴らしく、大作であるにも関わらず、無駄な展開が殆どない。ちょっと信じられないアルバムである。繊細で叙情的なメロディーが多数織り込まれている他、要所要所ではラウドに盛り上がり「ロック」のダイナミズムも楽しめる。是非多くの人に聴いて欲しいと思う。

　当時出ていた日本盤のコピーにはこうある。「壮大な叙情詩の世界へようこそ…90年代最大の問題作！」

　非常に素晴らしい作品なのを承知の上で、敢えて「素晴らしい」「名作だ」とは言わず、「問題作！」と言い切った東芝EMIに拍手を送りたい。

本国イギリスでは映画化もされた一大コンセプトアルバムです。
70分以上の大作ですが時間がたつのも忘れて完全に引き込まれてしまいました。特にラストの"Made again"は聴いてる僕らですら「生まれ変わって」しまったかのような錯覚すら覚えます。ストーリーも英語もわからなくても自然と涙が頬をつたいます。個人的にはこのアルバムの完成度では、同郷の巨星ピンクフロイドの高みまで昇りつめたかの観があったんですが･･･。

またこのアルバムを完全再現したライヴ盤もありますのでぜひ一聴を。彼らの演奏技術の高さも証明されています。
