   フランス人のヴァイオリン奏者、ジャン・リュック・ポンティ（42年生まれ）はステファン・グラッペリやスタッフ・スミスの演奏を聴いて、クラシックからジャズに転向した。75年にマハヴィシュヌ・オーケストラから独立してソロ活動をスタートさせたが、一躍その名を有名にしたのが本作だった。録音は77年。ヴァイオリンといえばグラッペリに代表される優雅な演奏をついイメージしがちだが、ポンティの場合はロック~フュージョン感覚のダイナミックなプレイで聴く者を驚かせた。一言でいうと、海をテーマにした壮大で宇宙的なファンタジー、とでも形容したいサウンド。自由奔放なポンティのヴァイオリン・ソロが圧巻だが、同時に参加メンバーの顔ぶれも興味深い。なにしろアラン・ホールズワース、ダリル・ステューマー、スティーヴ・スミスといったロック系のミュージシャンが参加しているのだ。やはり、聴きものは4部構成からなるタイトル曲だろう。なおこのアルバム、最初に日本発売された時のタイトルは『秘なる海』だった。（市川正二）

この人の音楽をなんて形容したらいいんだろうか？？スペーシー／華麗なメロディー／無駄のないリズムアレンジ／曲そのものを越えてしまっている各楽器のイマジネイティブなソロ／人間の声以上に雄弁なバイオリンソロ／幅広い彼の音楽的なバックグラウンド／クラッシックの素養に裏打ちされた完璧なテクニック／用意周到な完成度高いアレンジ....数え上げたらきりがないのである。そんだけのものが同時に同居している音楽それが彼の音楽かもしれない。この時期ポンティーはテクニックに乗せたスペーシーなものを目ざしていたように思われる。フランクザッパと同じく、バックメンバーはすんごく厳選されている天才ミュージシャンたちばかりで固めている＝完全主義者、今回ソロのスペースをたっぷり与えられているのはなんとあのAホールズワース。ドラムは後にバイタルインフォメーションを率いるSスミス。KBはフランクザッパバンドでおなじみアランザボッド、この人のシンセソロはすごい、完成度めちゃ高い。リズムギターにのちジェネシスのツアメンになるダリルステュマー。すんごいツワモノが結集している。曲はなんというかヨーロッパテイストというべきか、ディディエロックウッドやフランソワブレアンのようだ。私が彼の音楽に長年魅了されている理由は、優雅さと情熱の同居に他ならない。このアルバムは彼の音楽的なコンセプトつまり＝夢＝ファンタジー的なもの＝ユートピア＝桃源郷＝ハッピーなるもの＝ポジティブなるもの＝を職人的な資質＋芸術家的な資質でうまい具合にバランス良く表現したのがこれだ。ほかにおすすめはいろいろあるが、Mystical adventure/open mind/No absolute time/スコヘン参加のFables/A taste for passion／Cosmic messengerと名作ぞろい、ライブもよし。より多くの日本人の人にポンティーのすばらしい音楽とメッセージが伝わることを切に願う次第だ。ちなみに私はこのひとの音楽を聴いて音楽家になるのを決心しました。ある意味音楽にとって一番大事なのは＝想像力＝映像喚起力、これらを大切にして音楽を作るチャレンジ精神のあるポンティーにいつもいつも感心させられるのだ。Sグラッペリとミッシェルペトルチアーニなき後彼とアダムホルツマンには期待している。

マハヴィシュヌのバイオリニストJLポンティのリーダーアルバムです。今回のアルバムでは彼のリーダーアルバム特有の美しさを残しつつ、各楽器のソロパートをフューチャーした作りになっています。何といっても、クレジットに各曲ごとのソリストの名前を書いているくらいですから。その中でもやはり注目は、A．ホールズワースがギターを弾いていることでしょうか。その他のメンツも相変わらずの凄さです。
サウンド的にはアルバムタイトル通り、ＳＦ映画のサントラを思わせるようなスペイシーで心地よいものになっており、ＪＡＺＺロックのフレーバーを漂わせたＦＵＳＩＯＮといった感じでしょうか。
何れにせよ、多くの音楽ファンにお奨めでき、かつ完成度の高いアルバムです。

もとマハヴィシュヌのヴァイオリニスト、ＪＬポンティのソロ作品の中でも完成度の高い円熟期のアルバム。彼の作曲家・アレンジャーとしての才能が凝縮したメロディアスで聞き易い作品（もちろんfusionおきまりの各楽器のソロも十分フィーチャーされている）。特にゲストのアラン・ホールズワースの演奏が全編にわたって堪能できる点が、この１枚を推す理由です。
