1976年発表。1975年ニューヨーク、ジェネレーション・サウンド・スタジオで録音。
メンバーはキースのピアノにチャーリー・ヘイデンのベース、ポール・モチアンのドラム、デューイ・レッドマンのサックス、ギレルミ・フランコのパーカッション。つまりは『生と死の幻想』と全く同じメンバーである。プロデューサーはエズモンド・エドワード。

キースはインパルスで8枚のアルバムを残している。いわゆる『アメリカン・カルテット』ではECMの『The Suvivor's Suite』が僕は最高傑作、次が『生と死の幻想』ではないかと僕は思う。本作はキースが全作品を作曲しているが、グルーブ全体としてとらえるべき音楽となっていて、中心で鳴っているのはキースのピアノというより、ヘイデンのベースとレッドマンのサックスだ。所々に後の『スピリッツ』と同じ世界が出てきて興味深い。

でも、やっぱりイマイチだ。

1975年録音。キース・ジャレットほどの稀代の天才でも、時が経つにつれ失うものもあるのだな、と感じさせられる一枚。彼のバンドは最近ではフリーのコンサートを始め、その自由自在のリズム、そしてしみ入るような叙情的なメロディは、ここで改めて紹介しなくてもいいだろう。さて、本題。「Rotation」の激しい、疾走感あふれる演奏。キースとテナーサックスが張り合うように、リズムを展開する。この荒削りな疾走感は今のバンドでは聴けないような、何やらマイルスクインテットの「Miles Smiles」の頃の演奏を聴いているような錯覚にとらわれる。「Everything that lives laments」はバラード。終盤、キースがダイナミックにリズムを弾くリフレインに特に惹かれる。チャールズロイドグループにいた頃のキースが弾いていたような、若々しいダイナミックな演奏風景が伝わってくるようだ。「Flame」はピアノは入らず、フルートとパーカッション、ミュゼット（チャルメラのような管楽器）が民族的な儀式を思わせる。「生と死の幻想」でも聴かれた音で、それがさらに民族性を増しているように思われる。「Misteries」では、ベースが活躍。
