ビーチ・ボーイズには多種多様のベスト・アルバムが大量に存在しており、また個人的にはビーチ・ボーイズはベスト・アルバムでお茶を濁さず、“オリジナル・アルバムを全作品聴くべきである”と思っているので、お薦めとは言わないのだけど、多くのベスト・アルバムには良質のレア・トラックが含まれており、結局は外せない場合が多いのも確かな事実であって本当に困る。本作も当然その部類で、このアルバム用に製作された２曲、弾けるディスコ・ポップの２４．とママス＆パパスの名曲をシャープにカヴァーした２５．ははっきり言って素晴しい。２５．はオリジナルに敬意を持ってもそれと同格くらいの出来であり、何としても聞いてほしいテイク。２２．も本アルバム用の新バージョンか少なくとも大幅なミックス違いであり、２１．もミックス違いの可能性が高い。ベスト・アルバムそのものとしては初期の曲が多く、ブラザー/カリブ時代の曲は２３．を除いて前記のカヴァー曲が２曲のみ、キャピトル時代も近年では評価の高いワイルド・ハニー以降は２０．のみと何とも潔い選曲であり、知ったかのファンには不満かもしれない。しかしいわゆるビーチボーイズの本質を考えるとこの選曲は正しいと思う。ＣＤ一枚で全貌を辿ることなんて不可能だし。おそらくは権利の関係があっての結果なんだと思うけど、買って損は無い良質なべすと・アルバムだと思います。
