TOTOファンの中でも、二代目ボーカリストのファギー・フレデリクセンを覚えてる人はあまりいないかもしれない。実は顔を見てはいけないＴＯＴＯ（笑）の中で唯一のイケメンで、５枚目の”アイソレーション”のみの参加で、バラードが歌えないと言う理由から解雇された？人です。どちらかというと、”アイソレーション”の時のボーカルのオーディションでフレデリクセンと最後まで争って落ちた人・先日解散したミスター・ビッグのエリック・マーティンの方が有名ですね。

　話を戻すと、そのフレデリクセンが７０年代に在籍したバンドがトリリオンなのです。このバンドをカテゴライズすると、アメリカン・メロディアス・プログレ・ハード・バンドになるそうです（←誰だよ、こんなカテゴライズをした奴は？!長すぎ！！）。同類項にはボストンやカンサスなどがいます。まあ、プログレっていうと、イエスやキング・クリムゾンのように、何だかやたら曲が長かったり、技巧に走りすぎていたりするきらいがあってとっつきにくいのよ。だから、その雰囲気だけを受け継ぎつつ、曲調はポップになった感じなのがこいつらかねえ（←よくわかんねえ）。７６年にボストンが出した”幻想飛行”が空前の大ヒットを記録（当時、アメリカの新人バンドがデビューアルバムで１０００万枚近く売ったのは記録だった）。そして、雨後のタケノコのように次々とボストンもどきが出てきたわけ。７８年になると、ボストンもセカンドアルバムを出し、ＴＯＴＯがデビューしたり、ジャーニーもボーカル（スティーヴ・ペリー）を入れて方向転換し、これらのバンドは全盛期を迎えます（ＴＯＴＯとジャーニーは入るのかな？）。その流れの中で、トリリオンもデビューしますが、日本のコアなファンに受けただけ（笑）で、商業的にヒットすることなく終わりました。結局、このアルバムでフレデリクセンは脱退、バンドもセカンドを８０年に出して解散してしまいます。
　で、このアルバムなんですけど、聴いてみると実にカッコいいんです。僕も段々マニアックなのが好きになってきたのかも。1なんか、ボストンの"More than a Feeling"っぽくて大好きなんですけど。4だって、フレデリクセンがバラードが歌えることを証明してると思うし。全編にわたって彼のハスキーな高音ボーカルの魅力満載。さすがは１０００人のオーディションの中から、あのエリック・マーティンを破ってＴＯＴＯのボーカルの座を手に入れただけのことがあります。彼がＴＯＴＯに残っていれば、ＴＯＴＯがハード路線で行けたかも（←だから解雇されたかも）。
