The BBC Radio recordings that make up
Something's Coming cover January 1969 through March 1970 and feature the original Yes lineup. These classical-inclined behemoths pushed the boundaries of rock--too far, some said. But Yes actually began life in 1968 as a harmonic covers band with a brave, new progressive jazz-rock direction. This being Yes, "covers" mean vaingloriously dexterous assaults on the likes of Lennon and McCartney's "Every Little Thing" and Leonard Bernstein's "Something's Coming." It's all period-piece stuff, introduced by the narcoleptic voice of John Peel and a very upper-crust Johnny Walker ("They write most of their own songs and this one is very nice indeed"). The previously unreleased "For Everyone" sounds like a forerunner of "All Good People" and actually includes Chris Squire's "Disillusion" segment ("Loneliness is a power"), which later turned up as the third part of "Starship Trooper" on
The Yes Album. Sleeve notes from Ian Rowe and former guitarist Peter Banks round off an attractive package.
