74年の3rd。ANGEで特に好きな一枚。農夫が聖書の中へ迷い込み、救世主になりかわろうとする物語を描く。メランコリックなメロディでフランス語が強烈に絡み付いてくる、暗く怪しげ、狂気の滲む幻想世界。クリスチャンデカンの演劇的ボーカル、クラシカルで独特の音色のオルガン、へヴィでメロディアスなギター、重みあるリズム隊。西洋らしい高雅・芸術性だけでなく、フランスの田舎の農民パワー（？）みたいな泥臭い野太さを持つサウンドが何とも豪快でカッコイイ。アコースティックで甘美な場面や陰鬱に沈む場面からギターやオルガンが荒々しく走り出す展開には圧倒的なダイナミックさがある。ジェネシスのフォロワーとされがち、実際影響されてはいるが、彼らにとって本質的な部分ではないと思う。ジェネシス無しでも、シャンソンというフランス文化とこの時代のロックが出会うことで必然的に発生するのがこのサウンドだと思う。
「農夫ゴドバン」はバイオリンとボーカルが何とも悲しげなメロディで、一気に御伽世界へ誘い込む。「アイザックの長い夜」は憂いと狂気が交錯する暗く耽美的な名曲。陰鬱なオルガンが垂れ込め、うねるギターとともにボーカルが苦悶、錯乱し叫ぶ。「救世主だったなら」は語りが演奏とともに狂気を増し爆発！怖い。「酒祭神のバラード」は美しい歌に陶酔。「出エジプト記」は優雅な歌声、クラシカルで野太い音像が行進。後半は爆発的に駆け出し、ギターがオルガンと絡みながら高揚。スリリング、胸が高鳴るカッコよさ。「砂糖戦争」は旋律自体はけっこうメルヘンだが不穏な空気を纏い、気付けばどす黒い闇に絡め取られる。「光の子」は闇を振り払う勇ましい突進。歌声はヒステリックな叫びへと変わっていく。「錯乱の果てに」は笛の音が跳ねる牧歌的なムードだが、徐々にボーカルが変になり笑い出す。後半は情熱的なギターソロ中心に盛り上がる。

デカン兄弟を中心とした、フランスのユーロロックの雄、ＡＮＧＥの３枚目のアルバムです。
高校生の頃の記憶では、フランスのＥＬＰという紹介をされていたような記憶があるのですが、サウンド的には、フランスのジェネシスと言うほうが適当でしょうか。とりわけ、フランシスデカンの演劇的ボーカルは、どこか、ガブリエルにも似た所があります。ドラマチックな楽曲に、演劇的ボーカル、ヘヴィなリズム隊、激しいｇ、重いｏｒｇ、それにクラシックの要素が絡み、なかなか、聴き応えのある世界を作っています。
ユーロロック特有のボーカルな苦手な方も、この１枚は大丈夫ではないでしょうか。ユーロロックの名盤とでもいうべき１枚です。

この作品が一番好きだ。アンジュは、フランスを代表する大物プログレ・バンドである。叙情派プログレとも言われるが、たとえば、ジェネシスやキャメル、フォーカス、タイフーン、ノヴァーリス、エニワンズ・ドーターとも全く違う個性の、非常に哀愁のあるサウンドである。フランス語とロックは合わないと、言われることがあるが、アンジュだけは別である。作品全体のコンセプトと、歌と演奏（特に重厚なキーボード群）が見事に調和しており、素晴らしい作品に仕上がっている。
