この「エヴァンゲリオン」という作品は各キャラの深層心理をテーマにしていると思います。もちろん、ロボットものといってしまえば、それまでかもしれませんが・・でも、今、このＤＶＤを買おうとしている方はリニューアル版のエヴァＤＶＤを買うことをお勧めします。なぜなら、価格・画質・音声がすべて、リニューアル版の方が勝っているんです。ですから、今これはあまりお勧めできません。ということで、星４つにしました。最後に一言！物語は最高です！

中学生、高校生は自分と似たような所や思春期のなんとも言えない感情をこのアニメを見て感じるはず。このアニメが放送されてからやたらと意味深なアニメが増えたほどの傑作中の傑作。

当時日本にいなかったこともあり、このアニメのテレビ放映は一切見ていないし、その後ビデオでも全く見ておらず、このDVDではじめてのエヴァンゲリオン体験となった。

　もう第一話からしてエヴァンゲリオンが主人公の少年にとって母親の胎内であることは明らかである。コントロールルームが液体で満たされたり（羊水のイメージ）、アンビリカルケーブルというエネルギー供給線はumbilical cord、即ち臍の緒である。少年は父親からは拒絶されており、母親の記憶をもたず、自分がなぜこの世界に存在しているのかその理由さえわからない。この第一巻では、半ば強制的に戦いの場に投げ出された少年が、アイデンティの混乱から生ずる精神的葛藤に煩悶する様が描かれている。感情のコントロールを逸してキレたときの破壊性はすさまじく、この辺が「実存」とか「努力」とかいう言葉とはおよそ無縁の現代人の精神的有様と奇妙に共鳴する。

「機動戦士ガンダム」に、かなり影響されているように思う。単なるお子様向けのロボットアニメでは無いことは確かだが、内容の割に展開が遅く、あまり熱中できなかった。
