９４年作。チープなハウス風のサウンドでデビューしたグループだったが、このアルバムでは初期の頃のチープさはなくなり風格すら感じさせる仕上がり。一曲目から映画のワン・シーンのような美しいインストが流れるが、なんとなく・・・かつてのブロンディの名作「オート・アメリカン」を思い起こさせる極上のクオリティ。生弦や木管、厳選されたシンセの音色を駆使して作られたサウンドは素晴らしく、ポップ・ミュージックとしては、やはり前述のブロンディが相応かも。私としてはこれを最高の賛辞としたいです。日本版には２曲のボーナス・トラックが付きますが、ジグソーのカヴァーの、セピア・カラーのゆううつ (WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE) は最高の出来なので、どうせならこの曲の入ったものの入手をお薦めします。

Saint Etienneの３rdアルバム「Tiger Bay 」（1994年発表）からの
マキシシングル。
ミックスとプログラミングを担当しているのはリック・スミス。
1曲目 Pale movie 3:51
2曲目 Pale movie （stentorian dub) 6:45
3曲目 Pale movie (secret knowledge trouser assassin mix）10:15
4曲目 Pale movie （lemonentry mix) 4:05
タイトル曲も素晴らしいですが、残り3曲のアレンジが圧倒的なほど美しく
物憂げで繊細な仕上がりになっています。Saint Etienneのポップセンスが
余すところなく発揮された90年代の彼らを代表するマキシシングル、と
言っても過言ではないと思います。
3曲目のPale movie (secret knowledge 〜）はテクノかつトランシーで
儚さ全開の名アレンジ。「Casino Classics 」にも収録されています。
4曲目のPale movie （lemonentry mix)は日本盤３rdアルバムのボーナス
トラックとして収録されてもいますのでファンの方なら聴いたことがあるかもしれません。
とにかく素晴らしいマキシなので、お持ちでない方は中古だとお値段も
安いですし、これを機会にぜひ購入されてみてはいかがでしょうか？
