名作。1997年に発表されたVigin移籍第2弾となる作品。前作『janet.』の怪物的ヒットを受けて製作された本作は、彼女のアーティストとしての自信が全体から感じられる、完成度の高い出来となっている。

リードオフ・シングルとなった「Got til It's Gone」ではジョニ・ミッチェルを大胆にサンプリングし、独特な世界観を創り上げた。絶大な成功を収めた彼女が抱える「孤独」を極めて魅惑的に表現した楽曲群は聴く者を圧倒させる。

「Together Again」（全米1位）はAIDSにより他界した彼女の友人に捧げられた曲であるが、この曲の真の素晴らしさはシングル・カットにあわせて製作されたリミックス版の方にあるだろう。同一の曲でありながら、オリジナルとは全く異なる世界を提供した彼女の表現力にはただ言葉を失うしかない（リミックス版は残念ながら本作に収録されてはいないが、マキシ・シングル版などで聴くことができる）。

また、彼女の作品群を貫くひとつの大きな主題である「セクシュアリティ」は、「Free Xone」「Tonight's the Night」「Rope Burn」などの楽曲にて極めて先鋭的に表現された。「Tonight's〜」は女性であるジャネットが「girl」に対し歌いかけるという趣旨で、オリジナルとは全く異なる空気感を漂わせている。シングル・カットはされていないものの、一聴に値する楽曲。全米を席巻したクィア・ムーヴメントの流れをいち早く採り入れた彼女の感性は脱帽ものである。

セールス的には「janet.」や「All For You」に及ばなかったものの、永く聴きつづけることのできる作品だろう。90年代の女性アーティストの作品の中で、重要な位置を占めるアルバムの1つだと言ってよい。

ジャネット・ジャクソンのアルバムは全て持っています。その中でも一番好きな曲が、このアルバムの16曲目に収録されている「Every Time」です。ジャネットの曲に多いアップテンポの曲ではありませんが、ジャネットのきれいな声が本当に心地よい一曲です。

移動の時の気分盛り上げ役として選びました。まー、派手な刺激はないような気がしますが、ジャネットらしい一枚ではないでしょうか。息ながく愛せる一枚になると思います。
