華の70年代の初頭を飾るにふさわしく、Al Kooperのプロデュースで登場したファーストにして名作。
約30年前、始めて聴いた時の驚きをよく憶えています。バネの効いたリフでグイグイ押していく"I ain't the one"でいきなり圧倒され、"Three steps"でまた口アングリ。更に泣かせ所をきっちり押さえた"Tuesday's gone"や"Simple man"、そしてスライドをバッチリ聴かせた後、当時名を馳せたWishbone Ashかと見紛うばかりの艶やかさでツインリードが炸裂する"Freebird"。デビューとはとても思えないふてぶてしさと相俟って、新鮮かつ強烈なインパクトでした。
米国バンドといえば西海岸、Janis亡きあとはDeadやJ. Airplane、CSN&Yあたりの印象が強かった自分にとってはよけい驚きだったわけです。その後のZZ TOP、Black Crowsといったバンドの活躍を見ると、彼等が米国ロックの王道の一つを間違いなく切り開いた偉大なバンドであり、その第一歩が本作だったわけです。70年代のロックが脚光を浴びているここ数年、是非押さえておいて頂きたい名作です（今回は"Ｆreebird"のLive versionまで加わって大感激！）。

レーナードのデビューアルバム。
しかし、最初のアルバムでありながら、ロック史上でも屈指の名曲が入っている。その曲はフリーバード。もちろん、レーナードの代表曲の一つだ。
９分オーバーの長い曲だが、全く長さを感じさせない。

スローテンポで始まり、途中からスリーギターの妙技で、一気に上り詰めていく。この曲を聴くためだけにこのアルバムを買っても、絶対に損した気分にはならないだろう。
もちろん他にも魅力ある曲が満載だ。
アメリカ南部の音、サザン・ロック。このアルバムを聴くと、「バンドってのは、やっぱり良いねぇ」となることうけあいです。
