80年代初頭,フュージョン全盛の中にあって一世を風靡したグループ,ステップスの3作がようやくCD化された。今ではリーダー作を発表しているブレッカー,ガッドも当時は各種のスタジオ・ワークに活躍していた名手だった。六本木『ピット・イン』のライヴでは渡辺香津美がゲストで7に参加している他,いずれも白人ミュージシャンによる新世代4ビート・ジャズを繰り広げている。時代の経過を感じさせつつも,カッコよさは現在でも変わらない。

始めて聴いたSTEPSのアルバムがこれ。Liveなのにビックリするほどきっちりとした仕上がりに愕然。
そもそも当時Steve Gaddのドラムにあこがれていた私としては、あの手この手のフレーズ連発にただ
ただ唖然（当時としては超絶技巧）。今聴いても懐かしの５連符フレーズ等のオンパレードですし、
妙にフラットなGadd流Swing（決してSwingし切っていなくてどちらかというとShuffle)が聴けて懐かしい。
アルバムはというと２枚組でやや長いし、途中スローな曲が長々混ざり若干忍耐を要するかもしれません。
しかし、そのCool Downを見越したかのように繰り出されるFawlty TenorsやNot Ethyopia等の技曲、
そしてMidテンポでクールに聴かせるTea BagやYoung And Fine、絶妙の構成です。
無論締めは永遠の名曲Sara's Touch、これ以上は有りません。
この後メンバーは色々変転しますが、STEPSの中で所謂クロスオーバー色の強いアルバム群中では最高の
出来ではないでしょうか。

ずーとＣＤが出ていないか探し続けて見つけました！メンバーもマイク・マイ二エリを中心にマイケル・ブレッカー、エディー・ゴメス、ドン・グロルニック、そして驚異のドラマー
スティーブ・ガッド、日本代表選手の渡辺香津美も世界の超一流スタジオミュージシャンと互角にギンギンなソロを披露してくれてます。

とにかくこれは名盤です。絶対おすすめですよ！

スティーブ・ガッドファンにはおすすめの一枚。
「ティーバッグ」「フォルティーテナーズ」「ヤングアンドファイン」
が聞き物。　
ドライブ感、スリル感あるプレイは気持ちがいい！

その他、ピアノ、サックスの名プレイがいいムードを作り上げている。
「マンハッタンジャズクインテット」とは違う味のライブとして、

ガッドが楽しめる貴重なセッションです。
