ジェネシスの初代ギタリストとして有名な彼ですが、個人的にはそんな肩書きがなくても十分通用するアーティストだと思います。
本作はジェネシス脱退から７年経った後に発表されたソロ第一作で、その間に自身のスタジオ”ファームヤード”を設立したり、ピアノを習ったり、クラシック等の音楽理論を学んだりしていたようで、この彼の音楽に対する姿勢がとても美しく思えます。ジェネシスの旧友マイク・ラザフォードと多数共作しており、フィル・コリンズが歌いあげる２曲目は新しい世界へ旅立つような、ファンタジー溢れる作品となっています。アンソニー・フィリップスを代表する永遠の一曲です。ジャケットのマンドリンを持った詩人が丘の上から美しい景色を眺める、まさにジャケットどおりの名曲。３~８は組曲形式で、チューダー王朝について描かれているようです。物悲しい９曲目も素晴らしく、それぞれ８分前後あるタイトル曲のパート１、パート２ともに素晴らしい。また、ボーナス曲もボーナストラックとは思えないほどいい曲なので個人的にはかなり好きです(PP&P２のボーナストラックもすごくいいので薦めておきます。)。
アンソニー・フィリップスは作詞・作曲、そしてほとんどの楽器を自分で弾くこともあり、リズムセクションも含めて私はこの”拙さ”が大好きなんですが、この辺りが好き嫌いの分かれ目になっているのかもしれません。変に洗練されていない、素直・純朴な作品。いい意味でポップ。傑作とよんでも差し支えないと思うけれども、良作といった方がしっくりくるような気がします。勿論、星五つです。内ジャケのイラストを含め、ジャケットの細部に至るまで愛情を注がれたピーター・クロスの絵がとても音楽にマッチしています。１２弦ギターや木管楽器の響きが美しいアルバム。商業主義とは全くかけ離れた、自分のやりたい音楽を心をこめてやる、そんな思いが伝わってくるような気がします。

　Anthony PhillipsはGenesisの初代ギタリストで、２枚目の「侵入」発表後にGenesisを脱退し、それから７年を経て初めて出したソロ・アルバムがこの作品です。

　とはいえ、私がこのアルバムを買った時、Anthony Phillipsが元Genesisだとは知らなかったんですよね。それでは何故買ったのかというと、Michael RutherfordとPhil Collinsが参加していたということもありますが、それ以上にジャケットの美しさに惹かれたというのが一番の理由です。

　いかにもイギリスらしい丘の上に吟遊詩人が座り、その向かいの泉からは半透明の妖精が立ち上がっているという、まるで良質の絵本の挿し絵のようなジャケットはこれだけでも持っている価値があると思わせるに十分なものでした。

　現在はＣＤ化されていますが、ぜひともＬＰサイズのジャケットで持っていたいものです。というのも、ＣＤサイズではわかりずらいちょっとした遊びが随所にあるですよね（たとえばカタツムリに乗った小さな騎士とか...）

　サウンドの方はGenesisの「侵入」に通じるギターを中心とした中世風のアコースティック・サウンドで、いかにもプログレ！という派手さはあり!ませんが、とにかく美しいの一言につきます。

　特に「which way the wind blows」と「god if i saw her now」は当時のGenesisより良いんじゃないかと思ってしまうくらいにPhil Collinsのボーカルが素晴らしく、実になんとも心に染みます。

　それ以上に好きなのがAnthony Phillips自身が歌う「collections」から「sleepfall:thegeese flywest」へと続くラストです。正直言ってAnthony Phillipsのボーカルはお世辞にも上手いとは言えないのですが、悲痛な内容の歌詞と合っていて、これが泣けるんですよね。
　また「sleepfall:thegeese flywest」もこの上なく優しく美しい曲で、睡眠導入ソングとしても最適な曲だと思います。

Genesis初代ギタリストのアンソニー・フィリップスの1stソロです。
彼の穏やかな性格が反映された、非常に繊細かつ丁寧な作品です。
当時Genesisのフロントマンになった
ばかりのフィル・コリンズのやや愁いを帯びたヴォーカルが素晴らしい
2曲目の「Which Way The Wind Blows」はお勧めです。
あと、タイトル曲及び、アンソニー自身の素朴な歌唱が何とも良い
「Collections」やそれに続く「Sleepfall」の幻想的世界観は見事。
次作『Wise After The Event』と一緒に聴いてみて下さい。
