キャッチーなメロディーながら、面白いことを後ろでやっているんだよね。キーボードのセンスもすばらしいし、詩もいいね。某Ｔ○Ｋの番組でアイドルのように取り上げられていたからか、なかなか評価されなイバンドだ。この2枚目がベストですな。この後、フランシス・ダナリーはアメリカナイズドされ、普通の人になっちゃったのが残念。プログレ、もしくは純粋にロック好きであれば持っているべき1枚でしょう。聞いたことがない人はもったいないくらいいいアルバムだよ。

　某雑誌がルックスの良いイエスのようなプログレバンドと宣伝していたのを思い出すイットバイツのセカンドアルバム、このアルバムを初めて聞いたときに、イエス以上に叙情的な曲の完成度の高さに非常に驚かされた。捨て曲がなくアルバム全体が良い曲で満たされている。シングルになった「キスライクジューダ」や「ローズマリー」のようなハードロックのリスナーに受け入れられる曲もあれば、「オールドマンとエンジェル」やタイトル曲のようなプログレ風長尺曲もあり、幅広い層にアピールできる音楽が並べられている。個人的に好きな曲は「ハンティングザホエール」でホワンホワンとしたシンセと悲しげなコーラスを聴くと気持ちが18年前にタイムスリップしてしまうようで、僕にとっては絶対に手元から手放せない愛聴盤だ。このアルバムのプログレ的な音楽性を方向づけたのはキーボードのジョンベックだったらしく、フランシスのハードロック指向とは意見が分かれてしまい、次作はややハードロック的なアルバムにシフトしてしまう。もう1枚くらいこのスタイルで作ってほしかった。フランシス以外のメンバーは今何をしているのだろう？

「イット・バイツ（It Bites）」ホントに好きでした。

というか、好きです。

80年代のプログレでは、ダントツでしょう。

大御所（ジェネシス、イエス、EL&P、ピンク・フロイド、キング・クリムゾン）に次ぐほど、と言ってもイイです（やっぱり、PFM、フォーカス、ジェントル・ジャイアントの次ぐらいかな・・・）。

それぐらい、惚れ込んでおります。

最高傑作は、この「ワンス・アラウンド・ザ・ワールド」。必聴です。


そのIt Bitesを引っ張って行ったのがフランシス・ダナリー。


ピーター・ガブリエルを思わせる、ちょっとクスんだクセのあるヴォーカル（実際、フィル・コリンズ脱退後、ジェネシスのオーディションに参加）。あくまでもロック・フィーリングを失わない、エネルギッシュなギター・ワークで、「若さに満ちあふれた、ポップなプログレ」を展開してくれました。

90年にIt Bitesを脱退（最近、フランシス抜きで再結成しましたがイマイチです・・・）。

以降、これまでに８枚ほどソロ・アルバムを出してますけど、はっきり言って、売れてる状況とはほど遠いです。アコースティック・ギターの弾き語りといった、味はあるけど地味な活動ぶり。ロバート・プラントのツアーに参加したのが、ハイライトと言えるぐらいでしょうか。

ところが、2005年になって、動き始めます！

イエスのクリス・スクワイアとピーター・バンクスの在籍していた伝説のプログレ・バンド「The Syn」が再結成。そのツアーにダナリーが参加したというわけです。

さらに、The Synは今年に入ってニュー・アルバム「Big Sky」をリリース。フランシス・ダナリーが、プロデューサー、コンポーザー、ギタリストとして参画し、アコースティックな現代的プログレを生み出しました。

ところが、彼はまた脱退。。。今度は、「New Progressives」という、意味ありげな名前の新バンドを結成です。

要するに、ひとところに落ち着けないヒトなんですね。

とにかく、暴れはじめそうなフランシス・ダナリー。要注目です！
