そうですね、３０年越しと言っても大袈裟じゃないです。
このメリーホプキンの「悲しき天使」は私が１４歳頃の曲だったんです。そういえば恋おおき年頃で、彼女のにごりのない歌声と叙情的なこの曲はかなりのインパクトがあったと記憶しています。当時はラジオからしょちゅう流れていたせいかな~このレコードを買いそびれたのは・・。

いま思えばこの３０年のあいだには何度か買うチャンスがあったと思うのですがそのたんび機会を逸していたんです。ところが最近彼女の名前と曲名をインターネットで発見してやっとこのＣＤにめぐり会えたという訳です。
おかげさまでやっと胸のつかえが取れた気分です。
ありがとう御座いました。

当時まだ18歳だった彼女の清清とした何にも換えがたい宝物です。洗練されているとは言いがたいのですが、時折、無性にこれが聴きたくなり、聴きながら涙を流してしまいます。ニルソンの作ったPuppy Song（You've got mailで使われていましたね）がお勧めです。心が疲れたときに聴いてください。

世界音楽へ早くから目を向けていたアップルレコード（主にＰ．マッカートニー）から生まれた歌姫のデビューアルバム。世界的に大きな｢花｣を咲かせた大ヒット曲｢悲しき天使｣を収め、ボーナス収録されたこの曲の外国語バージョンがその戦略を象徴しているようだ。とろける様に甘く、優美で儚げな歌声が向いたと思われたのか、大衆曲それもミュージカルソングまで歌っているのにも驚かされる。これらの曲は大袈裟な編曲が施されたものが多いが、そうしたハンデを背負いながらも彼女のボーカルは充分魅力的である。とは言え声質の美しさを損なわない的確なアレンジの方が良いに決まっているので、当然聴きどころはそうした曲になる。後の｢大地のうた｣へ繋がる曲、特に声が実存的に迫ってきそうなアカペラで始まり、ギター伴奏のみの簡潔な展開、再度アカペラのテーマに戻るVoyage Of The Moonでは魔的なほど官能的でありながら、あくまでも透明で汚れのない奇跡のボーカルを聴く事ができる。これらに込められた歌心は｢強いられた｣曲群とは生命力の違いで差が今では歴然としているのがわかる。

デビュー早々の大成功、可憐なルックスが災いして中傷やゴシップ紙に泣かされたという｢操られた｣アーティストとしての側面が最も色濃く、バランスの悪さは隠しようがないものの、佳曲が揃い彼女のボーカルの魅力も過不足なく堪能できるとは思える。
