ユタヒップはブルーノートに四枚のアルバムを残したが、その中でもヒッコリーハウス２は素晴らしい作品だと思う。とりわけアフターアワーズを聞いてください。ため息がでるばかりです。ユタヒップはトリスターノの影響を受けたとされるが、ニューヨークに出てきてホレスシルバーに感銘を受けたそうです。ユタは彼女名義のホレシオという曲をこのアルバムで演奏しています。しかしヒッコリーハウスでステーキでも食べながら、この演奏を聞きたかったとつくづく思います。

ドイツ出身の女性ピアニストがデビューしたドキュメントを伝える傑作第2弾。意外にも力強いタッチに驚かされるが、楽想の豊かさ、統制の取れたメロディラインとともにきわめて優れた資質を感じることができる。秋吉敏子もそうであったが、異国での挑戦を可憐な女性がいかにに見事に達成したかということだけでも胸が詰まる思いである。ヒップの場合、ニューヨークでの演奏生活が必ずしも満足のいかないものであったようだが、このライブにおいても無理解な観客への戸惑いや新天地での違和感などを感じ取ることが出来る。優れた才能を持ったピアニストだっただけに残念なことではあるが、そこにもヒップのメンタリティと時代の潮流が絡んだことを思えば致し方ないことなのかもしれない。しかし、それ以上に、遺された演奏が時代を超えて生き続けていることこそ、ユタ・ヒップというピアニストの類まれな才能を感じずにはいられない。
