彼等といえばこれだろう。演歌風コブシ廻しの歌からギター・コレクターとして有名な２人のギタリスト、そしてパープル勢の腹八分目の抑えた感じが何となく贅沢を醸し出す。彼等各々の本来の破天荒さをここまでまとめた手腕はこのバンドという単位での実力だろう。発表当時は、随分とヒット曲を意識したな？という印象だったが、逆にこれを聴くと今ではここまでのヒット性のある楽曲を書ける連中があまりシーンに居ないのに気づくだろう。結成前に入念にリハーサルを行い、磨いていった曲そのものの重みと魅力が、単にハード・ロックに終らせない広がりと輝きを放つ。彼等のキャリア全体の中で最もバンドらしさと固いチームワークを感じる作品。各自のソロもいい出来が満載だ。

ソロで十分やっていける猛者が集まって、１９８０年のイギリスで自分らの音楽をやりたい、でも売れもしたい。と思ってアルバムを作ったら、こうなった。と言う感じがたまらない。
元パープルの３人は言うに及ばず、ミッキー・ムーディーのスライド（Ｔ６のスライドは絶品！）、バーニーのクラプトン張りのスクイーズ・ギターも外し難い。
　しかし、あえて言うなら、このアルバムの肝は、ニール･マーレイのベースだと思う。
　ビートルズにおけるポール･マッカートニーのように、メロディアスでありながら全体を引き締めることにも万全だ、と言ったら言い過ぎか。
　普段より手数を抑え目の、イアン・ペイスのドラムと相俟って、本当に良いグルーヴ感なのですよ。
　惜しむらくは、ジョン・ロードが引っ込みすぎか？　この感じだったら、もっとピアノじゃなく、ハモンドでブリブリ行っても大丈夫だったかも。
　ともあれ、リリースから２６年経ち、当時のハードロック小僧がオヤジになり、家でヘネシーなんざ傾けながら同じアルバムを聴いても気持ちよくなれるという、なかなかに稀有なキャラクターのアルバムなのである。
　このキャラは、不思議なことに同じバンドのひとつ前にも、ひとつ後のアルバムにもないものだ。（頷ける方は、試してみてね）

’８０年リリースの３rd。
’８０年代中期の産業ハード・ロックの代名詞的な存在でもあったが、この時代の彼らはソウルやブルースからの影響を取り入れた渋めなリズミカルなＨＲをやっていた。
後にリメイクされる名曲＃1の他、代表曲＃2、＃3も収録されているし、曲の粒が揃った好盤なので、大ヒットした「SERPENS ALBUM」('87年)以前の彼ら本来の音楽性を知るにはうってつけのアルバムと思います。
