2008 digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of the trendsetting Electronic/Art Rock band's 1980 release, the first of their albums to feature Midge Ure on lead vocals and guitar. Includes a bonus CD featuring relevant B-sides, live tracks, rarities and previously unreleased tracks. Replacing original frontman John Foxx with Midge was a bold and brilliant move made even sweeter by Ure's emotional vocal performances and his knack for a good tune. It didn't hurt that the band finally achieved their deserved success with this release. Includes the singles 'Passing Strangers', 'Sleepwalk', 'Vienna' and more. EMI.

ミッジ・ユーロが加入して再スタートを切った新生ウルトラヴォックスの最初のアルバムです。
タイトル曲"Vienna"の大ヒットで、それまでのマニアックな人気から一気にメジャーな存在になった彼らですが、
このアルバムは前作"Systems of Romance"で築いたサウンドを昇華させ、
さらにシーケンサーやリズムマシン、ポリフォニック・シンセなどのテクノロジーの進化も伴って、
非常に先鋭的な曲が詰まっています。
プロデュースも前作同様ジャーマンプログレ/ニューウェーブの要人コニー・プランクで、
彼自身このアルバムはベストワークの一つにしています。
よく「ミッジ加入後はチャート狙いで商業主義的」といった批判を聞きますが、
7分に及ぶオープニングナンバーのインストゥルメンタル"Astradyne"を聞けばそれが間違いだという事がわかります。
また"Mr.X"という曲はジョン・フォックス時代の曲"Touch&Go"から派生した曲で、
それまで歌っていなかったドラマーのウォーレン・カンが低音ヴォイスを披露しているのも大きな変化でしょう。

　８０年代初頭、「ニュー・ヨーロピアンズ」をＣＭに起用した人は偉いと思う。当時、ウルトラボックスは、日本では無名に近かったが、そのＣＭも一つのきっかけとなり、ニュー・ロマンティクス・ムーブメントが、日本に上陸することになったからだ。それらは、ドアーズ、Ｔ．ＲＥＸ、ボウイ、ロキシーミュージックといったアーティストを尊敬する、という点が共通項だった。
　今から聴くと、ウルトラボックスの中で、「ニュー・ヨーロピアンズ」は、むしろ異色作だったことがわかる。しかし、今ではそれが陳腐に思えてしまえるほどに、８０年代以降のロックに（Ｊ-ＰＯＰも含め）強烈な影響を与えた。

が評価されなかったのは気の毒で仕方ないのだけど
このアルバムの充実っぷりはすごい。

passin'strangersとかのナルちゃんぶりもいいし、
なにしろナタでぶった切るようなギターが響く
「new europeans」のカッコよさはしびれる。

リアルタイム世代には認知されてるけど、若い奴には
ほぼ「何すかそれ」状態はホントに惜しい。

リッチキッズ聞いた奴はコレも聞け！と言いたい。
