'90年代後半のブリティッシュHR/HM最高傑作アルバムと思われる。
僕が海外メタルにハマるキッカケとなった「The Name of the Rose」が入っている。
当アルバムはメタル専門誌 BURRN！'96年の最優秀アルバムに選ばれた。
確か同曲は同年のベストチューンだったはず。'95年には当バンドがブライテストホープに輝いた。 僕の原点であり、やはり本場のメタルは一味違うと知らしめてくれた楽曲の数々。
代表曲と個人的に好きな曲の詳細は次の通り。

1. The Name of the Rose
静かな雰囲気で長くせつないアコースティックギターのイントロからハードに展開する。
静と動を繰り返す曲展開は、ブリティッシュスタイルでありながら日本人のツボを突いている。
名曲中の名曲。 聴き易く口ずさみたくなるメロディが心地よい。
１０年経った今でも聞き飽きない。この曲に出会えて良かったと思っている。
6.Wait for you
ハードなドラムとギターリフが特徴。全体的にミドルテンポ〜アップテンポ。
7.The Rainbow
ライヴアルバムに収録されており、それを聴いた時に気に入った曲。
ボーカルメロディに特徴がある。キャッチーとは言いがたいが癖になるメロディ。
10. Wings of the Storm
ハードなドラムとリードギターのイントロが特徴。
疾走感があり、ギターリフも適度にハード＆ヘヴィでカッコイイ。

ごく最近、オークションにて７００円という安値で落札したのだが
その額で落札したことが失礼に値するほど素晴らしいアルバム。
昨今のメタルシーンでは過去の産物として扱われそうだが敢えて聴いて欲しい。
これからTENのフルアルバムを聴きたいのならば同作をオススメする。
アルバムタイトルが物語るようにロマンティックでコンセプチュアルなアルバムです。

　９６年発表のイギリス出身のメロディアス・ハード・ロック・バンドの２nd。前作からわずか５ヵ月という異例のリリースとなったアルバムだが、前作と同時期に作られていた楽曲が並ぶために、名作と言われる前作の延長線上にあるというべき内容になっている。
　また、他のメロディアス・ハード・ロック・バンドではお約束とも言える程に、ハイトーン・ヴォーカルが主流だが、このGary Hughes独特のシャウトしない歌唱法はちょっと慣れが必要。しかし、それを吹き飛ばすかのようにヘヴィでダイナミックなVinny Burnsのギターが素晴らしい。

　メロウすぎるアコースティック・ギターのイントロから切れ込んでくるギター・リフが恐ろしくカッコイイ1、個人的にはイチオシのエモーショナルな名曲3、エジプトのファラオの事を歌った56、神秘的で美しい8、反戦の歌9、疾走感あふれる10、美しいバラード11、ファンキーでカッコイイ13など捨て曲なしの名盤です。

　Gary Hughesのヴォーカル＆コンポーザーとしての才能ばかりが注目されるけど、Vinny Burnsのツボを心得たギター・プレイも最高。

ソロ・アルバムを2枚リリースしていたゲイリー・ヒューズ(Vo)が、3rdソロ・アルバムを制作するべく
ヴィニー・バーンズ(G)に声をかけた事から始まったTEN。
デビュー・アルバムはメロディック・ハードの傑作として多くのファンから喝采を浴びた。
このアルバムはソロ用のマテリアルを放出するべく僅か半年足らずのインターヴァルでリリースされた2ndアルバムだ。

これだけ速いテンポでアルバムを出されると楽曲の質に不安が出るのが普通だが、ゲイリー・ヒューズの凄い
ところは、この状況で前作以上の楽曲を揃えてしまったところ。
あまりにも劇的なタイトル・トラックを始めとして、叙情的なメロディック・ハードとしては最高級の楽曲が並んでいる。

そこら中にエモーショナルなフレーズを挟み込むバーンズのプレイもお見事。

TENの入門編に最適。
