私がストラトヴァリウスを知ったのは、この5thアルバムからである。
元イングヴェイで長年やってきたヤンス(key)が加入したBANDとして、
かなり注目はしていた。

まぁ~聴いてみたらビックラだった。
ティモ・コティペルトの声を聴いて、あれ？マイケル・キスクか？
と思ったくらいだったからだ。
透き通るようで、高音における伸びがまさにソックリだ。

しかし、彼はマイケルのコピーではない。
それを、随所で聴かせてくれ、マイケルの色は出ていない。

楽曲はのっけからスピード溢れる曲を聴かせてくれ、
確かにメロディック・スピード・メタルの雄ではあるが、
スローテンポの曲も有り、非常にバラエティに飛んでいる。
叙情的なマイナーコードで繰り広げられる彼らの世界は、

切なく、また激しい音を奏でる。

ギターもヘヴィで重く、ティモ・トルキの速弾きは、
イングヴェイには勝るとも劣らずである。
更にヤンスの健在ぶりは、非常に素晴らしい。

彼らの知名度を上げた名作の１つであろう。

一曲目の「father time」からいきなりすっ飛ばして行くこのアルバムですが「forever」のようなスローテンポの曲も聴き所。
そして８曲目の「startsphere」はインストゥメンタルでティモ・トルキのカッコイイ、ギターソロが聴けます。

メロスピにバラードありと非常にバランスのいいアルバムではないかと思います。やっぱり「father time」最高だ~！

これってもう１０年前の作品になっちゃうのか･･･。
早いね〜('･ω･`)

つーわけで、今作はヨーロピアン・メタルの雄、ストラトの飛躍のキッカケとなった通算５作目。

彼らの音楽が一つの完成を見たのは次作「VISIONS」であることは、多くのファンが認めるところだが、今作におけるメンバー・チェンジなしには、「VISIONS」のクオリティはあり得なかったものとして、今作の重要性は大きい。

前作で加入したティモ・コティペルト（Vo）に続き、本作より、イェンス・ヨハンソン（Key：元SILVER　MOUNTAIN、YNGWIE）とヨルグ・マイケル（dr：元RUNNING　WILD）が加入。ここに黄金のラインナップが誕生したわけであるが、とにかくヨルグの加入効果がハンパではない。
イェンスのこの作品における貢献度はさほどではないが、ヨルグの重量感のあるメタル・ドラミングは、本来の楽曲の勢いを３割増に聴かせてしまうほどスピード感に満ちたモノ。それは時計の音から一気になだれ込む＃１“Father　Time”で即座に判ることだろう。多彩なフィルも素晴らしい。

ヨルグ先輩ばんざーーーーーーーーい！！！！！

このアルバムでは、まだ今日の彼らが放っている美麗な孤高性は備えていないが、それでも楽曲は＃１“Father　Time”をはじめ、クラシカルなメロが冴え渡る＃２“Will　The　Sun　Rise？”や、大ティモが限界に挑戦した＃５“Speed　Of　Light”、超Forever　Freeタイプな疾走曲＃１０“Tomorrow”、究極のリリシズムを発揮したバラード＃１２“Forever”など、その他も含めて聴き所は多い。

今聴いてもやはり魅力的なアルバム。
もし聴いていないメロディ派がいるのなら、ゼヒ一聴をオススメする。

一般的には次作の方が評価は高いが、メロスピというよりはまだネオクラ寄りの本作
(どこで線を引くかは難しいが)の方が個人的には好きです。
