　デンマーク産、ネオ・クラシカル・HMバンドの3作目。初代シンガー：ヘンリック・ブロックマンが来日直前に脱退。マネージメントの紹介で加入したアメリカ人シンガー：D.C.クーパーを迎え、初来日公演を行った彼ら。D.C.を含む編成でのNEWアルバム（当時）が本作だ。

　前任者の適度に荒れた声も、あれはあれで良かったが、歌唱力・声域どちらを取ってもD.C.の方が上である。ディープな低音で朗々と歌わせても上手いし、コーラスでは一転して高音でシャウトを決める。音域は3オクターブ近い。

　前2作はポップandキャッチーだったが、高音を歌えるNEWシンガーを得て、楽曲も一段劇的になった。オープニングの「Last Goodbye」からして、途中でオクターブ跳躍して畳みかけるし、エンディングの「Time」も同様だ。主旋律は相変わらずいいし、アンドレのキーボードをはじめ演奏隊も全員上手い。殆ど、プログレッシヴ・メタル顔負けのテクニックだ。

　バラードの表現力は、阪神大震災に捧げられたレクイエム「Far Away」でも証明済み。「夜が明けた朝靄の中、それは訪れた」と歌うあたり、震災の状況を十分調べた上で制作されたことが伺える。悲しみの中から立ち上がる人々を描いたこの作品は、他アーティストの「元気を出そうよ」ソングとは一線を画す完成度であった。

　廃墟の中を歩く人間を狙うスコープ…。ジャケットからも分かるように、戦争、貧困、災害といった社会的な問題を描いた曲が多い。持ち前のクラシカルで荘厳な旋律によくマッチしている。

　個人的には、変拍子を使った演奏が印象的な曲「1348」に最も心を動かされた。ヨーロッパで100万人が死んだインフルエンザ：スペイン風邪を描いた作品で、長い間奏の前後に短い歌が配置された変わった構成の曲なのだが、実に素晴らしい。

クラッシクとハードロックを見事に融合。
更に本作では、プログレッシブさとヘヴィさが増している。

この手のバンドの中からロイヤル・ハントが突出したのは、アンドレ・アンダーセンの才能はもちろんだが、アメリカ人ヴォーカリストのD.C.クーパーの功績が大きいのではないかと思う。

エモーショナルでワイルドな歌唱が、他と一線を画す要因になっていると思う。

楽曲もアレンジも素晴らしく、本当に脱帽させられる。
個人的には一番好きなアルバムだ。

DCの名を一気に知らしめる作品になったのは明らかと思われる。
北欧系のメロディアスメタルに、アメリカ人シンガーなんて、なんともTNTを彷彿ともさせるが、DCはTNTのトニーハーネルとはまた違う歌唱の持ち主であった。JUDASのシンガー最終選考に残ったという前触れ込みが強くでてて、そればかりが強調されてはいたけども、とにかくこの作品においてアンドレの曲にはまる声質でもあり、やや裏返った変な高音を放つ割に低音の響きが素晴らしい。
アンドレのキーボードとうまくマッチして、またレンジの広さがこのバンドの曲の幅を広げるきっかけになったのだと思う。個人的好みとして、ドラムがやや重たい印象。これが気に入った方は、是非Live in JAPAN1996の2枚組CDをお勧めします。かつての曲がDCによりとてもいい仕上がりになっており、かつ全員の演奏力の高さを堪能できます。
