今ではハードコアなメタルが主流となり、こういった正統派の北欧メタルは若干押され気味だがやはりこのバンドは歴史に残るべき作品を作っている。

先駆者は言わずもかなレインボー、クラシカルなメロディにドラマティックさ、ハードなギター、キャッチーな部分も持ち合わせた元祖。

しかし、ロイヤルハントも負けてはいない。

嵐のようなデビュー作は先に世界へ飛び出したイングヴェイと共通する部分も多いが、キーボードの比率が決定的な個性を産みだしている。

ソナタアークティカもいいけど、彼等の再評価がそろそろ欲しいところだ。

ネオ・クラシカルと言うと、イングヴェイのような、速弾きギターヒーローが率いるケースが多いが、このバンドはHM/HRには珍しい、キーボードがリーダーのバンドである。その名もアンドレ・アンダーセン。身長197cmの大男にして、眉毛が繋がっており、毛深く、大酒飲みで、押しが強い。とても繊細なクラシックなどやりそうにないのだが、ロシアで正式な音楽教育を受けており、キーボードを弾かせたらそれは素晴らしい音を奏でるのである。

現在は、名のある高音シンガーを起用するのが通例になっているが、デビュー当初の彼らは、決してそうではなかった。初代ヴォーカル：ヘンリック・ブロックマンは、潰れた声のブギー調シンガー。レンジが狭く、高音は殆ど出ない人物だった。

デビュー作「LAND OF BROKEN HEARTS」は、それを補うように、覚えやすいキャッチーな主旋律が随所に配置され、殆どの曲が3〜4分のコンパクトな作りをしていた。若干、反戦のメッセージを織り込んだ全13曲の中で [3] Flight、[7] Heart of the City、[12] Stranded の3曲が特に優れていた。しかも、その他の曲も皆佳曲揃いであったため、デンマークの新星は一気に人気が沸騰。「またしても日本のメタル・ファンが優れた新人を発掘した」と当時話題になったものだ。表紙に道化師をあしらった次作「CROWN IN THE MIRROR」でも優れた作曲力を見せつけ、3rd.で遂にワールドワイド契約を勝ち取ったのは周知の通り。

現在は少々マンネリ化が進み、大仰なだけのワンパターンに嵌ってしまっているが、彼らの本質は、キャッチーでコンパクトなこのデビュー作にこそ、あったのではないか？ と自分は思うのだ。
