エリック・カルメンが在籍したことでも有名な、アメリカを代表するパワーポップバンド、ラズベリーズ。ロック・ポップスファンなら、おそらくどなたでも一度は「Go All The Way」や「I Wanna Be With You」といった彼らの大ヒットナンバーを耳にしたことがあるのではないでしょうか。
エリック・カルメンと言うと、ラズベリーズ解散後に彼が大ヒットさせた「All By Myself」から、壮大なバラードをイメージするロック・ポップファンが多いのではないかと思いますが、その美しいメロディーはラズベリーズ時代から早くも炸裂、デビューアルバムにも関わらず、いくつかの曲では早くもオーケストラをバックに入れた「壮大系バラード」好きの片鱗をうかがわせています。
しかし、ラズベリーズの凄さは、その美メロが The Who ばりのラウドなドラムに、これでもかと言わんばかりのディープなコンプレッサー処理で、迫力あるサウンドに乗ってズンズン迫って来るところ。コーラスワークもなかなか激しく、ほとんどの曲でコーラス唄いまくり。バンドとしての一体感がすばらしく、聴いてるこっちもついついコピーバンドでも作りたくなってしまうような、聴いて楽しい、演って楽しい、まさにパワーポップの王道を突き進む快作です。
このCDは、そんな彼らの1stアルバム「Raspberries」と2ndアルバム「Fresh Raspberries」を1枚のCDに収録した超強力盤。言わずもがなの大ヒットナンバー「Go All The Way」や「I Wanna Be With You」、初々しさの残るアコースティックナンバー「Come Around and See Me」や「Nobody Knows」「If You Change Your Mind」、そして壮大バラード系「I Saw the Light」「Don't Want to Say Goodbye」「I Can Remember」と、彼らのカバー範囲の広さも特筆ものですが、さらに凄いのは捨て曲なしの美メロのオンパレード。どの曲もシングルカットできるくらいのクオリティがアルバム2枚分ぎっしり詰め込まれています！特に2ndアルバム「Fresh Raspberries」はビートルズやビーチボーイズ直系のポップなナンバーが目白押しです。

リアルタイムでは聴いた事が無かったのに、このアルバムを聴いた時、
まるで昔から変わらない旧友に突然あった時のような親近感を覚えた。
10数年前、初めてラジオで聴いたエリック・カルメンの「恋にノー・タッチ 」からこのＣＤたどりつき、
こんなに優しく、美しいメロディをわずか2年の間に世に出したバンドがいたなんてと驚いたほど。
元気をくれる「Go All the Way」、ロマンチックで切ない「If You Change Your Mind」等、
全て捨てられないバラエティにとんだ曲ばかり。
この「Power Pop, Vol. 1」に 「Vol. 2」プラスで、彼らの短い音楽活動のほぼ全てが入っている。
そして、それがベスト盤と言っても過言ではないほど素敵な曲ばかり。
巡り合えた幸運に感謝したくなる自分にとっては一生の宝物のようなＣＤ！
