往時のサンフランシスコの音といったら、やはりコレ！「フレッシュ・エア」（フィルモア最後の~も良かった）を間に挿む曲の流れ。全体にかかる生温かいモワーッとしたエコー。耳にする度に録音された地ハワイ、オアフ島ハレイワを思う。いや、耳にしなくてもこのＬＰが我が家のレコードラックに収まっている事自体に幸せを感じてしまう。ＤＩＮＯのヴォーカル、ソロも良いけど、やはりコレに尽きる。次作「ＷＨＡＴＡＢＯＵＴＭＥ」も同傾向で佳曲多し。しかしサイケデリックを延々と垂れ流すクイックシルヴァーではなく、コレが私の人生の一枚。

このバンドほどその時のメンバーによって、雰囲気や出来が違ったバンドも珍しかったような気がします。で、これは、奇跡に近い上出来の作品です。かのニッキー・ホプキンスがメンバーにいてそしてディノ・バレンティが復帰し、それほど我侭を言わずグループとしてのまとまりが最高の状態の最高のアルバムです。今から思えばニッキー・ホプキンスがこのグループの正式メンバーであったことも忘れがちですが、あの時代を語るときには欠かすことの出来ない伝説のバンドであり、そのバンドのベストアルバムです。

音楽の楽しみ方は人それぞれですが、ある程度歴史のあるバンドやアーチストと、現役バリバリの若手の音楽では違う聴き方もできます。もう存在しないバンドや亡くなったアーチストについては、その歴史をふまえて残された音を楽しむのも一興です。私はこういった聴き方を歴史聴きといっているのですが、このQMSもそんな聴き方で味わいが増すバンドのひとつです。
彼らの歴史上、最も注目すべきはメンバーチェンジによるサウンドの変遷で、もともとギター中心のジャムバンドとして活動していたQMSに転機が訪れたのは、1969年、イギリス人キーボーディストのニッキー・ホプキンスの参加でした。3rdアルバム『SHADY GROVE』でそれまでのアルバムとは比較にならない程の洗練さを手に入れたQMSは、1970年、諸々の事情で別行動をしていた元リーダーのディノ・バレンチが復帰し、バレンチの楽曲を中心としたアルバム『JUST FOR LOVE(ただ愛のために)』と『WHAT ABOUT ME』を発表します。しかし、バレンチの独裁体制に不満を持ったギタリスト、ジョン・シポリナとホプキンスは後者を最後に脱退、QMS史上最高の布陣はたった１年足らずで崩壊してしまいました。その後QMSはほぼバレンチのワンマンバンドになり、73年頃解散してしまったそうです。
本作『JUST FOR LOVE(ただ愛のために)』はシングルヒット「Flesh Air」の収録もあり、QMSの最高作に推す人も多いそうです。確かにトータルアルバム風な佇まいと楽曲の充実度は他のQMSのアルバムにない深みがあり、時代の空気感もたっぷりとパッキングされた良いアルバムです。
ただ、ここは敢えて彼らの歴史をふまえて上記の３作、その前史としての１・２作目、その後のQMSの６作目以降などもぜひ聴いてみて下さい。
