このアルバムが出た頃、TVKでリリース直後の彼らのアメリカでのライブを見た。
「Once」「Even flow」「Alive」などやっていて、初めて見た＆聞いた自分にとっては、すごく新鮮で強く惹かれるものを感じ、すぐに買いました。
番組の中でエデイーのインタビューがあり、その後寡黙になって行くことが想像できないほど、テレながらも、うれしそうにバンドや曲のことを話していたのが記憶に残っている。

ポップな感じの曲が多いことは確かで、いわゆるグランジの意味である”薄汚れた”とは、程遠い。
でも、何とカテゴライズされようと、曲がポップであろうとなかろうと、彼らの精神性の高さは最初から存在していたことは、このアルバムが証明している。
昨年３月に武道館で見たときのエデイーは、TVKで見たときと変わってなくて、「Once」も「Even flow」も「Alive」も「Jeremy」も、同じ輝きを放っていました。・・・感動・・・。
２ndの「Vs.」は、もっとエッジが立ち攻撃的ですが、１stと行きつ戻りつすることで、それぞれの良さがとてもわかる。
この２枚は”天才兄弟”です。

初めてシアトルという地名を知ったのがパールジャム。初めてグランジという言葉に触れたのがパールジャム。初めてオルタナティブという言葉に触れたのがパールジャム。初めて『ロックだぁ~！』と感じたのがパールジャム。初めて生で聴きたいと思ったのがパールジャム。初めて予約までしてニューリリースを買ったのがパールジャム。初めて頭から最後までじっくり聴いたのがパールジャム。
あの頃は『オルタナって分けわかんな~い』なんて言っている人もいたけど、間違いなくロックなのよ。とりあえず流行廃りはウザイって思ってる人に聴いてもらいたいなぁ。きっとロックが分かるよ。

シアトルのグランジシーンを支えたGREEN RIVERを前身とする、グランジ最重要バンドの一つが彼等であり、これがファーストアルバム。

エディ・ヴェダーの内省的で、世の悪を鋭く描く歌詞は、当時の『X世代』の共感を呼ぶこととなり、その意味も込めてこの作品は、同じ１９９１年にリリースされたNIRVANAの『NEVERMIND』と並んで、彼等のヴァイブルとなった。代表曲である2『EVEN FLOW』を含む。

カート・コバーンからの「ニセモノ」発言や、どこかコマーシャリズム的な言動から、NIRVANAのライバルとしての立場を否応なく背負わされたバンドであったが、NIRVANA崩壊後、そのような立場を担わされることもなく、アメリカのロックの帝王としての立場を形成し、現在に至っている。
だが『アンチ』なものを徹底的に糾弾する姿勢は決して変わることはない。

ライブでの価格値下げ運動や＜チベタン・フリーダム・コンサート＞への常連参加、ライブ盤の一斉CD化等という、スケールの大きな彼等の「パンク」的アティチュードは、常に僕を魅了して止まない。
