この頃の英ジャズ・シーンとエクスペリメンタル・ロックの人脈の美味しい処を凝縮したメンツによる快作２枚のカップリング。おそらく同じ時期に作曲／レコーデイングされたものらしい統一感がある。ここでのイアン・カー、ジョン・マーシャルらの演奏には覇気があり、クリス・スペデイングもまるでラリー・コリエルばりにフュージョンしていて面白い。この後彼等の幾人かはジャック・ブルースらのセッションに投じる訳だが、ジャックのソロを聴いて、バックの音が気になった人は本作も納得するでしょう。Nucleusはこの２枚と次のソーラー・プレクサス、またイアンのソロ、ベラドナ辺りがベスト。外れはありません。とにかく当時としては新鮮な音作りであり、徹底して硬派。身が締まる名作群です。BGOのシリー!ズは音も良く、ジャケさえきっちりリメイクされれば申し分ないんですが。

お薦めは1stである｢Elastic Rock｣の方。印象としては聴きやすくなった｢ビッチェズ･ブリュー｣と言ったところか。スペディングのgtはマクラフリンを想起させ、その気で聴いているとB.スミスのssもどこかしらウェイン･ショーターの演り方を彷彿とさせるから不思議。ジョン･マーシャルのエッジの効いたシンバルやハイハットもデジョネットほどではないにしろ、全体を巧く引き締め、程よい緊張感を創りだしている。とは言うものの決してイージーでもイミテーションでもなく、綿密に練りこまれた構成、変拍子やウィットに富んだメロディ、時折垣間見せる郷愁感はブリティッシュ･ジャズシーンに革命を起こしたとされるイアン・カーならではものと言える。よくプログレやフュージョン辺りで引き合いに出されるが、もっと幅広い層に聴かれるべき作品。特にジャイルズ･ピーターソン経由のブリティッシュ･ジャズ、ECM、「キリマンジャロ~」以降のマイルスが好きな方にこそ、是非。
２ndの方は様々なエフェクターを駆使した色彩豊かな印象。ソウルやファンク、ロックの要素を増した感がある所、まさにプログレ。初期のカンに通ずる所もあろうが、どこかしら消化不良気味。
