これほど見事なまでに構成されたプログレ組曲は、少ないと思う。ひとつひとつの曲が良くできていて、それが自然につながっていて、よどみがありません。

アナログで言うと、Ａ面の７曲は、プログレらしい複雑で緊張感のある演奏が繰り広げられ、電子音に導かれＢ面に転じると、ラテン風のおおらかなサウンドが現れる。そしてラストは、彼らの作ったもっとも美しい曲、イッツ・オール・オーバーで終演する。

私は、ジェネシスのサパーズ・レディー、キャメルのスノー・グースと共にプログレ三大組曲のひとつに挙げたい。

でも、ネクターの以前の作品は、大作主義に走りすぎ、いまひとつの感がありました。それが、サウンズ・ライク・デスで、個々の曲の完成度を高めたアルバム作りをし、その曲作りの精神と大作主義がうまくマッチして、奇跡が起きたように思います。

イギリス人のバンドなのに、ドイツで活動し、そしてアメリカに渡った、というユニークな経歴も、この作品に影響しているように感じます。

ネクターは、１９６９年に西ドイツで結成された。本作は８枚目で、彼らの「唯一の傑作」らしい。本作を聴く限り、ドイツ出身らしさは皆無で、典型的なアメリカンロックのノリである。あのラリー・ファースト（シナジー）のゲスト参加が的を得ていることは確かで、彼の影響が随所に聴かれる。くどいくらい軽快かつ流麗な明るいシンフォニック・ロックが演奏されており、ブリティッシュ・プログレ・ファンだけでなく、カンサスやボストン、スティックス、トッド・ラングレンズ・ユートピア等のポップなアメリカン・プログレが好きな人にもおすすめします。
