何があったのかリスナーの立場では知るべくもありませんが…1~4rd迄のメタリカがお好きな人にはお勧めできません。私は全曲聞くことが出来ませんでした…。それでもフェイバリットなバンドなので努力しようと試みましたが、結果、無理でした。

リリース当時は「速くないっ！」「激しくないっ！」「METALLICAじゃないっ！」と非常なショックを受けました。METALLICAにこんな進化を望んでいなかったわけです、昔からのファンの一人としては。
しかしながら、よくよく聴いてみると前作「ブラックアルバム」の延長線上にあるサウンドであることがわかります。よりヘヴィさを重視しグルーヴ感を追求した音作りでありながら、METALLICAらしい場面転換で展開していく楽曲が揃っていて、意外にもかっこいい曲が多いアルバムと言えます。ジェイソンのベースもかなり前に出てきていますし、『ヘヴィロック』という範疇で聴けば、すんなり耳に入ってくるのではないかと…。
でもやっぱり、『METALLICAのアルバム』として聴くには物足りない感があるのは事実。M1『Ain’t My Bitch』みたいな曲を何曲か配置して欲しかったなぁ…。
デビューしたてのバンドなら星5つのサウンドなんですけど、METALLICAじゃあ及第点は付けがたいです。星3つ。

1stのメタリカからブラックアルバムまでは好きだけど個人的に最後まで聞いいて肩を落としてしまったアルバム。その後のRELOADを聴いて少しモチベーションを回復できたが。。。この作品で世界的に新たなファンが増えたと思われるが去ったファンも多かったのではないかなあ？　進歩しすぎてしまったバンドについて行けなくなってしまった自分にアレッ？俺メタリカ好きなはずだよね？と自問自答するがいまだにつらい。曲数が多すぎなのかな？
