   前作『ウイングス・オーヴァー・アメリカ』でライヴ・バンドとしての頂点を極めたウィングスが、しばしの休養後に発表した78年作。メンバーの相次ぐ脱退により、ポール＆リンダ、デニー・レインの3人編成となった中で制作されたアルバムで、タイトル通りに全体的にイギリス色濃い仕上がりだ。

   全米ナンバーワンに輝いた、ポールらしい優しいメロディが魅力的な佳曲「しあわせの予感」を筆頭に、ロンドンの霧を思わせる落ち着いたトーンの曲が多く、比較的地味な印象の作品ではあるが、それでもポールのキラリと光るメロディ・センスは素晴らしい。なお、ボーナス収録されたシングル曲「夢の旅人」は、イギリスではビートルズの「シー・ラヴズ・ユー」を抜く記録的なヒットとなった。（木村ユタカ）

前年のシングル‘夢の旅人’が、ビートルズの持つイギリスでの最多売上レコードの‘シー・ラヴス・ユー’をセールス的に抜いた記録的大ヒットになったために、久々に「英国らしさ」を意識して作られた。しかし、英ではパンク全盛のチャートに苦戦し、米では当然振るわなかったので、メンバー脱退まで勃発した、「皮肉な」アルバムになってしまった。しかし今聴けば、ややニュアンスの違うものの『スピード・オブ・サウンド』同様の、派手さをおさえたナンバーが展開するのが逆に飽きがこなくて、気持ちよかったりする。船上でベーシックが録られた、というエピソードを持つ作品でもある。

リリースが1978年というパンク/ニュー・ウェイヴ最盛期だったせいで、不当に過小評価されてきてしまった名作。確かにここで聴かれる落ち着いたサウンドは、当時のイギリスの過激な音楽シーンに受け入れられるものではなかっただろう。だが、ポールのファンならこのアルバムがキライという人はまず居ないはず。バラエティーに富んだ曲調、メロディの素晴らしさ、巧みなアレンジ、そしてどんな曲でも歌いこなしてしまうポール自身のヴォーカリストとしての圧倒的な力量･･･と、この一枚で彼の魅力がたっぷり堪能できる。中でも「I'm Carrying」はジョージ・ハリソンも「センセーショナル」という言葉を使って絶賛していた名曲。全体的にソフトでアコースティックなタッチの音作りがされており、レコーディング終了後に脱退してしまうギタリストのジミーとドラマーのジョーもその確かな演奏力で色を添えている。このアルバムやライヴ盤「Wings Over America」を聴くたびに思うことだが、当時の最強ラインナップによるウィングスの来日公演が実現しなかったのは本当に残念としか言いようがない。聴き込むほどにその良さがじんわりと伝わってくる一枚。

~つい最近まで彼の傑作はやっぱりどこを切っても彼らしいバンドオンザランと思っていたのですが、この前コンピレーションCDを作っていてその中に”幸せの予感”を入れてそれを聴いていてそういえばlondon townてアルバムがあったなあ、
~~
マイケルジャクソンにプレゼントした"Girlfriend"も入っていたな、なんてことを思い出してこのCDを買って（実は何十年も前にLPも買っていて、その時はほとんどきいていなかった。）しばらくipodにいれてこればかり聴いていました。このこれ以上足しても引いてもバランスががくずれてしまう位の絶妙のバランス感覚。ポールのモットーでもあるシンプリシティが最も~~いい形ででたアルバムで、彼の天才ぶりがいかんなく発揮された最高傑作ですね。今でもこれを聴くととても心が落ち着きます。~

バンドオンザラン以降のマッカートニーは全く好調。つまんない曲がないのがすごい。ふだんは邪魔？なデニーレインのボーカル曲に違和感がないのも特筆すべきことだ。
