最近ではメロディックヘヴィメタルというものが一つのジャンルとして確立されつつあるが、その原点はこのハロウィンであろうと思われる（少なくとも、私にとってはだが）。
そしてこの「keeper of the seventh keys」こと「守護神伝第II章」こそがその確立を大きく躍進させた一枚であることに疑いはない。

特に一曲目の「Invitation」から「Eagle fly free」への流れは圧巻である。
現ガンマレイのヴォーカル兼ギタリストであるカイ・ハンセンのスピード感あふれる演奏に加え、今ではソロで活動しているマイケル・キスクの伸びやかなヴォーカルが心地よく、このCDの発売から既に13年以上の歳月を経てもなお古さを感じさせない。

そして、軽快なリズムで思わず口ずさみたくなってしまうような「Rise and Fall」や「Dr.Stein」、迫力ある演奏が楽しめる名曲「March of time」やソナタアークティカもカヴァーした「I want out」を経て、10分以上もの超大作「Keeper of the seventh keys」で物語は幕を閉じる。
この重厚なストーリーは一度聞いたらやみつきになるだろう。

洋楽初心者の方にもオススメだが、このジャンルのファンだがまだ聞いたことのないという人がいたらぜひ聞いて欲しい一枚だ。

このアルバムはヴァイキーの天才的な曲を聴くことができます。
1から続く2は超名曲だし、45もお遊びっぽい曲だけどしっかりした曲、
10は１４分近くあるけどぜんぜん疲れないこのドラマティックな展開は天才
の一言以外思いつかない。
カイハンセンの7~9も忘れてはいけない。
そしてなんと言ってもキスクのヴォーカル、
澄み切ったクリアな声とその声を伸ばすのに必要な肺活量とセンスを兼ね備えた最高のヴォーカリスト。
こんなメンバーが揃ってるんだから良いに決まってる。
へヴィメタルという世界への入場券と言っても過言じゃない１枚。

と言ってはACCEPTなんかに失礼かもしれませんが、それぐらい”ジャーマンメタル”と言う言葉を定着させたのはハロウィンの、そしてこのアルバムの影響力だったのではないでしょうか。
現在のハロウィンとはラインナップも異なり、この時にこのメンバーだからこそ作り出されたサウンドは今でも色褪せる事なく強烈なインパクトを僕の中に残しています。
その後のマイケル・キスクのソロもガンマレイもあまり僕の中には印象を残す事なく過ぎていますが。。。

このアルバムでは『EAGLE FLY FREE』,『DR.STEIN』,『I WANT OUT』が特に気に入っていて、よく繰り返し聴いていました。
ヘヴィ・メタラーなら一度は聴いてもらいたいアルバムです♪
