白人の家族が楽しげに車に乗り、"There's No Place Like America Today"と謳う広告の前で、配給の順番待ちで列をなす黒人達の姿を描いたこのジャケット。このジャケットは元々、ある女性写真家Margaret Bourke-Whiteの写真作品をパロディー化したもので、アルバムタイトルもその写真の広告の中で謳われている"There's No Way Like The American Way（アメリカ流にまさるものなし）"を文字ったもの。幸せそうな白人達の前で、配給を待つ黒人達はアメリカの人種問題や黒人の貧困を物語る、非常に皮肉的な場面を描き出している。
もちろんCurtisもこの写真のメッセージと同じ様に、"There's No Place Like America Today"を思い切り否定的な意味で捉え、皮肉的な感情を込めて使用している。

Curtisはこれまでの作品の中で、黒人の同胞達の先頭に立ち、彼らを啓発し力強く生きる事、そして愛の大切にする事を力強い声を上げて歌ってきた。ただ、このアルバムに収められた曲が語っているのは、どうしようもない絶望感や諦めに満ちた言葉だった。

Curtisのサウンドの特徴として、都会的で何処かスリリングな緊張感を持っている所があるが、このアルバムではその緊張感が一層増して、まるで全ての演奏の音と、彼の声が押し迫ってくるような迫力がある。
その中で唯一美しいメロディーと愛を囁く"So In Love"という曲が、このアルバムをより一層引き締め、Curtisの厳しさの裏にある優しさが表れている気がする。
このアルバムはCurtisの作品の中で、最も完成度の高い名盤だと僕は思っている。でも、Curtis Mayfieldを代表する作品ではないと思う。この音源はあまりにも冷め過ぎていて、そして鋭すぎる。ただ、それでも大事な事を伝えようとして敢えてここまで彼は徹底して厳しい形でアルバムを制作したのだと思っている。本当に素晴らしい作品であると思う。
