カットアップ、コラージュの名作として誉れ高いファウスト1stアルバム(71年作)。

ジャーマン・ロックをよく、ジャーマン･プログレと呼ぶことがあるが、ジャーマンものをプログレと呼ぶからなんだか分かりにくくなるのであって、本来ジャーマンロックの音には、他の欧州プログレのような大仰な壮大さや演奏の超絶テクは皆無なのである。ジャーマンロックが、プログレと呼ばれる所以は、ただ方法論が進歩的であったという理由のみであって、今で言うならば、そのままポストロック的な音につながっている。このファウストの1stも、71年にして、見事にポストロック的な音の強弱のメリハリや複雑なのに軽快な響きを生み出している。だから、このような作品に対して、盛り上げるための展開やグッとこさせるメロディーなどを望む必要はない。

とはいえ、ではここにあるのが、単なる進歩的な実験であり、その後のサンプラー的なものという価値でしかないかというと、全くそんなことはなく、実は洗練されたカットアップ、コラージュであり、軽妙さという意味でのポップさを存分に感じ取ることができると思う。この部分を掬い取ることができれば、その後のポストロック勢に与えている影響の大きさについて、とてもよく理解できる気がする。

ファウストの伝説的1stアルバム。握り拳を写したX線写真のジャケットは、グループ名に由来する(ドイツ語Faustは「拳」の意)。内容は実に聴き易くおもしろい。少なくとも「So Far」や「Faust 4」よりはるかに「牧歌的」な印象を与える。レジデンツのファーストを好む人であれば、本作も普通に聞けると思う。

ジャーマンロックにおける最重要バンドのひとつ。
今でも色褪せることのない斬新な手法とアイデアで、影響を受けるミュージシャンも数多い。

淡々として醒めきった雰囲気を持つ楽曲。
様々な音楽を混ぜたとき、それが自由で広がりのある音になるか、しがらみの多い狭苦しい音になるか、が才能のあるなしだと思うのだけど、このバンドは完全に前者。

とことんフリーキーで心地良い音を聴かせてくれます。
