Dedicated to Drake, the lead track sets the tone for the British trio's dreamy set of sensitive baroque-pop excursions. On tracks like the pastoral "One Dream," Kate St. John's arsenal of classical instruments adds color to Laird-Clowes's folk-rock strummings, while Gilbert Gabriel's keyboards give an '80s sheen to the '60s sentiments of "Love Parade." 「Life In A Northern Town」が収録されているオリジナルアルバムというだけで大きな存在価値があります。よくあるように、ヒット曲だけが良くて、後は聴くに耐えないものではありません。自分もそうかと思って聴きましたが、曲は粒揃いで、１枚通して十分聴くことができます。さすがピンク・フロイドのデヴィッド・ギルモアがプロデュースをかって出ただけのことはあります。日本版には、リードボーカリストでソングライターのNICKのインタビューが載っています。バンド結成時のコンセプトや、ポール・サイモンに曲作りを直接伝授してもらったことなどが語られていて、とても興味深いです。不快でうざったい音楽評論家のバカ文が載っていないことは大きな救いです。「Life In A Northern Town」をいい曲だと思う人は、持っていて損はありません。

Life In A northern Town　はもちろんのこと名曲ですが、その他の曲もスローからテンポの速い曲まで、充実した内容でとてもいいアルバムです。

ただ、Lile~　ほど彼らの　素朴な要素がでていないというのも正直なところです。思ったよりも、ポップス的要素の多いアルバムでした。しかし、ボーカルの彼の歌い方　言葉の並べ方　一発屋という一言では終わらせたくないバンド　そしてアルバムです。でも　やっぱり　Life~は名曲ではないでしょうか。ビデオもぜひ見て欲しいです。

　高校２年生だった1986年の冬を思い出すと必ず本作の「ライフインザノーザンタウン」のＰＶの記憶がよみがえるほど印象深い曲だったし、ＰＶがいろんな番組で何度もオンエアされていた。雑誌のインタビューの中で、ニックが「ライフインザノーザンタウン」の作曲で弦が切れて３本くらいしかないギターを弾いている内に偶然ギターのメロディーがひらめいたとか、ポールサイモンにデモテープを聴いてもらい、ポールから「へーいやんやんやえいいややや」のアドバイスを受けた等の話をしていたことを思い出す。セカンドシングルの「ラブパレード」もいい曲だが、個人的なベストトラックはカバー曲の２曲目だと思う。ラブパレードがヒットしたらサードシングルでこの曲をカットすると言っていたが、この曲をセカンドにすべきだったかも、プロデュースはデイブギルモアが担当し、４曲目などはいかにもフロイド的なムードが漂っている。ギルバートの最も好きな曲は「ジョンと洋子のバラード」とインタビューで答えていたところが面白い。
