またまたすごいバンドが出現した。L.A.のハード・メタルを席捲しているというD.ドッケンを中心とした4人組だ。アルバムのタイトルは「歯と爪」という意味だが,タイトル通り彼らのサウンドは実にシャープで,かつよく計算つくされている。


Album Details

Japanese only SHM pressing. Features 24-bit mastering and packaged in a paper sleeve. The SHM-CD [Super High Material CD] format features enhanced audio quality through the use of a special polycarbonate plastic. Using a process developed by JVC and Universal Music Japan discovered through the joint companies' research into LCD display manufacturing SHM-CDs feature improved transparency on the data side of the disc allowing for more accurate reading of CD data by the CD player laser head. SHM-CD format CDs are fully compatible with standard CD players.

「LAメタル最後の大物」と鳴り物入りで登場したバンド。
しかし、その言葉通り、ややメロディアスな曲に
攻撃的なジョージリンチのギターが絡みつき、
強烈な印象を残すとともに、各メンバーの演奏能力も凄い！
LAメタル全盛期当時、下手なバンドが次から次へと出てきていましたが、
彼らの演奏能力は本物でした。
さすが、下積み時代が長かったこともあります。

そして、この2ndアルバムは、もちろん捨て曲無し。
正統派LAメタルの醍醐味を味わって下さい！

　華やかできらびやかなLAメタルブームから登場したドッケンだが、彼らは基本的に大衆的な音楽性を持ちながらも、ヘヴィメタルがヘヴィメタルであるが故の「攻撃性」を常に意識してきたバンドである。そんな彼らのセカンドアルバムである本作は、ヘヴィメタルバンドとしての攻撃性、一曲目から二曲目に至る流れに見られるような様式美など、ドッケンという硬派なバンドが持つもっとも硬派な部分を象徴する作品だろう。全編を覆うジョージ・リンチのギターの凄味はドッケンの作品中随一であり、ジェフピルソンのベース、ミックブラウンのドラムもスリリングな迫力に満ちている。ドン・ドッケンの歌い上げるメロディはメロディアスで、破壊的サウンドと好対照をなしている。ポップでメロディアスな魅力を持ちアメリカのメタルバンドは幾らもいるが、ドッケンのようにそれをアグレッシヴな攻撃性と高いレベルで両立させたバンドはそうはいないのではないだろうか。明るい「Just Got Lucky」やスピーディーでへヴィな「Don't Close Your Eyes」シングルになった「Into The Fire」などへヴィな音像のギターリフを存分に活かした良い曲が満載で、Alone Againのような叙情的でもの悲しいメロディを持つバラードもあり、アルバム全編にわたって聴き応えがある。しかしやはり、「Without Warning」から「Tooth And Nail」への流れ、イントロダクションとなる一曲目の静かなインストから、二曲目の激しくスピーディーなリフが切り込んでくるあの瞬間こそが、攻撃的バンドの攻撃的アルバムである本作のもっとも攻撃的な瞬間であり、本作のハイライトだと思う。

1曲目から2曲目を聴いた時は鳥肌が立ちました。
ファーストアルバムと違い4人のプレイは確実に進化している様に思えました。
全10曲捨て曲が無く素晴らしい出来のアルバムだと思います。
