Album Details

2008 reissue of Dokken's 1987 album, Back For The Attack proved to be Dokken's fastest-selling album ever (achieving platinum status shortly after its release), it would prove to be the band's last new studio album until 1995's Dysfunctional. Part of the same Los Angeles pop metal scene that hatched Motley Crue and Ratt, Dokken rocked hard, with a focus on frontman Don Dokken's melodic songwriting and expressive multi-octave vocals and George Lynch's masterful guitar wrangling. Together since the late 1970s, the band made their initial public impact when Elektra Records picked up the band's impressive '83 debut. The label would go on to release three more Dokken Albums--each better than the last--over the course of the next few years.

前作UNDER LOCK AND KEYの成功により益々素晴らしい曲を望むファンの想い通りメロディアスに、よりエッジのたったバッキングでＤＯＫＫＥＮの真骨頂となったアルバム。ジョージリンチのギターはカミソリの様に鋭くドンドッケンのボーカルはソフトながら今までよりアグレッシブにと歌い上げている　オープニングKISS OF DEATHは文句なく彼らのベストチューンであるしインストナンバーのMR SCARYの何かにとりつかれた様なギターは鳥肌ものである。シングルとなったBURNING LIKE A FLAMEはアメリカンロック然としている。当時はこのアルバムにただただ驚愕し次のアルバムをすごく期待していたが今思えば度重なるドンとジョージの確執から生まれたメロディーとヘヴィネスのせめぎ合いだったんだなあと改めて感じます。

世の中に数え切れないほど存在するであろうロック・レコードの中で、このアルバムほど切れ味の鋭いギター・サウンドを聴かせてくれる作品は他に無いんじゃないでしょうか。あまり話題になりませんが、個人的に最も気に入っているのが4曲目の”STANDING IN THE SHADOWS”です。特にブレイクしてソロに移る場面は何度聴いても鳥肌ものです。当時は裏返すのが面倒で、アナログ盤のA面（1~6）ばかりを繰り返し聴いたものですが、CDで聴くようになってからB面（7~13）の素晴らしさを再認識しました。HR系ヴォーカルとしては線の細さを指摘されがちなドン・ドッケンですが、ここではジョージ・リンチのカミソリギターと対等に渡り合っています。陰と陽、＋と-、水と油、ドンとジョージ。交わることは絶対に無いけど、互いに欠かすことが出来ない存在。まさに一触即発な2人の極限の緊張感が生み出す化学反応＝もう2度と産出不可能な激名盤の誕生。間違いなくLA メタルの最高峰。文句ある？

センス、テク、メロディー、激情…これら全てを持ち合わせた80年代以降のメタルギタリストは、個人的に言い切ってしまえば、ジョージ・リンチをおいて他には故ダイムバック・ダレル以外いないであろう。　確かに90年代に入っても、数多くのバカテクメタルギタリストが登場したがジョージのインパクトにはまだまだ及ばない。ジョージ自身はこのアルバムのミックスサウンドを電話越しに聴かされて満足していないようだが、このギターサウンドは唯一無二の特許音！　当時は「カミソリギター」と例えられていたが、切れ味はその数倍の斬鉄剣並み！！　全収録時間60分強という当時では大ボリュームにもかかわらず、１stトラックの1000％メタルソング「Kiss of death」から、ラストの「Dream worriers」まで捨て曲がないため一気に聴き倒せる。中でも「Mr.　scary」はメタルギター界で有名曲。　とかくギタープレイにだけ気を取られてしまいそうだが、素晴らしい楽曲とそれらのうえを奏で上げるジョージのギターが揃っているからこそ名盤に成り得たアルバム。　聴きすぎてCDケースがぶっ壊れたのも、コレクションの中ではこの作品が最初だった。　このレビュー読み終えたらすぐにカートに入れてレジへGO！！　このアルバム聴かずしてヘヴィーメタルは語れない。
