　アンドリュー・ラティマー(vo/g) 率いるイギリスのロック・グループ：キャメル、1991年発表作品。小説「怒りの葡萄」をモチーフに制作されたアルバムで、後に「キャメル復活の名作」と言われる。ストーリー仕立てで作られたサウンドトラックのようなヴィジュアルなサウンドと、ヴォーカル曲の覚えやすく優れた詞・メロディー。辛口の英国雑誌をして、「完璧！」と言わしめたアルバムだ。

内容：
　アメリカの西部開拓史が舞台になっている。夢を求めて西へ西へと進む一家。しかしあるのは荒れた大地と貧しい生活だけ。しかしその中で希望を失わずに力強く生きる人々の姿が感動的に描かれている。

　ヴォーカル曲「Go West」「Mother Road」「Rose of Sharon」「End of the Line」はいずれも前半に固まっている。合間に雰囲気を盛り上げるインストが挟まれており、ストーリーが目に浮かぶような構成になっている。で、このヴォーカル曲の完成度が凄いのだ。
　♪西へ行こう西へ 果物が実り 誰もが微笑むカリフォルニアへ、と歌う「Go West」。軽快なエンジンの音を模したギターと、ルート66を西へと疾走する車を歌った「Mother Road」。女性ヴォーカル：マエ・マッケンナとラティマーのデュエットになっている「Rose of Sharon」は、新しく生まれた生命を歌う。
　♪仕事を求めて、僕は長い列の一番最後に並ぶ　と歌うのは「End of the Line」。疲れた表情を浮かべた無数の男達。俺達が求めるのは、生活・家庭・そして夢。いつか報われる日が来るのだろうか？　余韻を残して前半が終了する。

　後半はインストで、まさにサウンドトラックのように身を任せればいい。キャメルというバンドはインストの描写力も重要な要素で、「えっ、後半は歌、無いの？」と言われるかも知れないが、騙されたと思って、聴いてみて欲しい。覚えやすい主旋律が満載だ。

　手に入れるならば、出来ればPony Canyonから出ている日本盤が良い。丁寧な解説と対訳が付き、このアルバムをより深く理解する手助けになるだろう。8年の歳月をかけ、自主制作で作り上げたこの名作を、是非多くの人に聴いてもらいたいと思う。

やはりキャメルはプログレの部類に入ると思われますが、アンディー・ラティマーの奏でる、他のプログレ・グループにはない、優しくメロディアスなフレーズは感動以外の何ものでもありません。このような部類の音楽は今の時代には受けるとは思われませんし、今更プログレなんて時代遅れ、などと思われる方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。でも、自分たちの真にやりたい音楽を目指して、レコード会社を離れ自らのレーベルから出したこのアルバムには、コマーシャリズムから逸脱しながらも、音楽のジャンルを超えた美しい感動の世界が広がっています。特にMother RoadからRose of Sharonにかけての展開は本当にすばらしいです！
