ディープ・パープルは『マシーン・ヘッド』を作った時、解散する直前だった。ライブを録音したアルバム『メイド・イン・ジャパン』を含めて、数え切れない程のハードロックのヒットが収録されたCDだ。ここには「ハイウェイ・スター」と、「スペース・トラッキン」と、ディープ・パープルの曲で一番ヒットした「スモーク・オン・ザ・ウォーター」が収められており、三作は初公開された。「スモーク・オン・ザ・ウォーター」は、この作品からグループのトレードマークになった、リッチ-・ブラックモアのさくっとしたギターの鼓動から初まり、これを機にリッチーは1970年代のギターの神様として広く認識された。しかしこのアルバムの一番の見所は、ロジャー・グローバーのリミックスによって作られている二番目のディスクなのだ。長い活動中止の期間を経た、オリジナルより一層エネルギッシュなバージョンで、ソロを生き生きと歌っている。

1997 release, a limited edition two CD set in a slipcase with a 28 page booklet for the 25th anniversary of their landmark 1972 album featuring 'Smoke On The Water', 'Space Truckin'' and 'Highway Star'. 'Machine Head' is remastered &with three bonus tracks: 'When A Blind Man Cries' & Quadro- phonic mixes of 'Maybe I'm A Leo' and 'Lazy'. Also featured here is an eight track bonus CD of 1997 mixes for all seven of the album's tracks, plus 'When A Blind Man Cries'. 18 tracks total. An EMI release.

70年代ＨＲシーンに金字塔を打ち立てた「Machine Head」のリマスター＆リミックス盤です。第２期ＤＰというと「In Rock」も代表作としてあげられますが、ハードコアなＨＲの「In Rock」よりもジョン・ロードに代わってリッチー・ブラックモアのイニシアティヴがさらに増して、クラシカル＆メロウ色が強まったこのアルバムのほうが、日本では人気が高いようです。

ＣＤ2枚のうち、Disc１はオリジナル音源のリマスター盤、Disc２はロジャー・グローヴァーが手がけたリミックス盤という全体構成。Disc１は１〜７がオリジナルで８曲目は「When A Blind Man Cries」という「Never Before」がシングルカットされたときのＢ面に収録された曲で、ＣＤとしては初めて日の目を見ることができました。うーん、確かにＢ面という感じの地味な曲です。９曲目の「Maybe I'm A Leo」と10曲目の「Lazy」は別テイクで、リッチーのソロもオリジナルバージョンと異なります。また、音質はさすがリマスター効果は絶大で、とくにドラムとベースの音が粒立って聞こえてきます。Disc２はロジャー・グローヴァーによるリミックス録音です。とりたてて特筆するべき点はありませんが、別テイクのプレイが聴けたりとやはり編集盤ならではの楽しみ方ができるはずです。

注意したいのは、こうした編集盤はあくまでもオリジナル音源を聴き倒したファン向けのアルバムであるという点です。ＤＰビギナーにとっては、いったい何が違って何が面白いのかはまるで分からないと思います。それこそ「口コピー」で全曲のソロパートをそらんじることができるマニアでないと、楽しみも半減してしまうでしょう。
