Out of print in the U.S. Taking Changesbowie one step further, Singles collects all of the Thin White Duke's biggest hits from 'Space Oddity' to 'Day-In Day-Out' and features overlooked gems like 'Drive-In Saturday', 'TVC 15', 'Beauty & The Beast' and others. Always five steps of everyone else, each of Bowie's releases pre-dated musical movements, often by years. For the average musician, this would have been a case of 'wrong place, wrong time' but in Bowie's case, he was always the leader and never the follower. It just took everyone else awhile to catch up to what he was doing. 37 tracks in all. EMI.

　70年代以降最高のロックミュージシャン、デビッドボウイ。カメレオンのように生き様を意図的に変化、進化させていく姿はロックの哲学者を思わせる。このシングルコレクションは文学青年ならぬ早熟なロック少年が才能を遺憾なくさせていく歴史を窺い知ることが出来、初心者にはお勧め。その後ぜひそれぞれのアルバムを聞きましょう。ボウイの場合は詩も熟読すればなお深みが増します。

　これ１枚にヒットした曲はほぼ入ってます。７０年代に作られた曲は売る気なんて無いのか、マイペースで気ままに自分のやりたい事をやってる感じ。「愛の悲しみ」「ヤング・アメリカンズ」に入っている気ままなラッパを聞くとなんか笑ってしまったものです。「あ、ボウイだなあ。」って。変に力が入っていないので（別の意味で変であるが）楽に聴けるし、今となっては、なんか癒されさえします。
　当時彼のシングルはベスト１０には入るが、いつも７位８位止まりで落ちていってしまうようなものでした。公開スタジオでリクエスト用にへんてこりんなレコードジャケットが飾られているけど、誰も彼の曲はリクエストしませんでした。なので当時、ボウイの曲を１曲丸ごとエア・チエックするのは至難の技で!した。それが、これの１枚目にほとんど入っているんです。貴重品です。
　２枚目は売るつもりで作っていた（？）頃の曲が多く入っています。やれば出来るんですよね。すこしさびしくもありますが。さんざん聴いた曲が多いので自分的には２枚目はそこそこです。でも、大ヒットした曲はこっちに集まっているので世間的にはこっちが上でしょう。
　あと、シングルス・コレクションなのに、大好きな「タイム」が入っていないのが不満。この曲他で捜しても無いんですよね。へんてこりんさが大好きなので、入れてほしかったです。これから出る新譜のボーナストラックにでも入れてくれないかな。

素晴らしいコンピレーションです。一通り聴いてみるとどこかで聴いた事があるような曲が結構あったり、クイーンやミック・ジャガーとの共作があったりしてボウイの活動の幅の広さをあらためて知りました。シングル・コレクションということですべての曲が個性的でボウイのくりだす音楽の魅力を余すことなく体感できます。
