’７８年発表の「ブレスレス」は「ムーンマッドネス」「レインダンス」に続くキャメル黄金期の最高傑作です。アンディ・ワードのドラム（特にハイハット）がキマり、看板アンドリュー・ラティマーのギターはとにかく光ってます。元キングクリムゾンのメル・コリンズはオーボエ、サックスで信じられない優しさを奏で、リチャード・シンクレアのボーカル、ベースがのびのび気持ちいい！ピーター・バーデンスはこのアルバムを最後にキャメルを去りますが、彼のキーボードとＡ.ラティマーのギターの掛け合いは、何度聞いても楽しい興奮を呼び覚ましてくれます。さらに特筆すべきは、この時代の録音ということが大きく影響してますが、音像の定位が良いので、バンドの魅力が堪能できます。

いろいろあるけどすべて略して、『サマー・ライトニング』が好きです。何回聴いたか分かりません。アンディー・ラティマーのギブソンギターの音がたまりません。曲の後半、延々と続く彼のギターソロは素晴らしく、サンタナや、ディープパープルの「チャイルド・イン・タイム」、ピンクフロイドの「タイム」、ゲイリー・ムーアあたりを楽しく聴ける人にはオススメ。ロックが持っているロマンチシズムと、青春のセンチメンタリズムを、これほど的確に表現した曲は少ないと思います。しかしなぜか彼らはこの曲が好きじゃないらしく、ライブアルバムでこの曲が収められているのを見たことがありません。

ほっとする音楽 ―― それこそ、懐かしい音楽。… そして、愛すべき音楽。
英国のプログレッシブ・ロック・バンド「キャメル」
７０年代末のアルバム "ブレスレス" をひさかたぶりに聴いた。
その、過剰なほど牧歌的で叙情的な音楽にぞっこん惚れこんでしまっていた…。
反面、その頃、盛り上がりを見せていたパンク〜ニューウェイブの流れに乗りかかっていたのではあるが…。

当時、来日公演があって（２０数年前、厚生年金会館だった。確か…）、私はＳ席二階で耳をそばだてていたと思う。
キャメルといえば、「スノーグース」とか「ムーン・マッドネス」とか、ファンタジックでリリカル、しかも、非の打ち所のない技巧を散りばめたすばらしいアルバムを続々とリリースしていた。
日本国内ではさほど知名度も高くなく、地味ではあったが、音楽的なクオリティの高い、クリエイティブな、言わば、「旬」なバンドだったように思う。
ライブに立ち会って涙を流したというのは、一にも二にも、この公演だけだった。
・・・なぜだろう。
不思議だが、彼らの音楽は、当時の英国におけるプログレッシブ・ロック ―― どちらかと言うと観念的な志向の強い路線から見れば、主流からははずれていたと思う…。
むしろ、先にも書いたように、ファンタジックでリリカルな情感、感覚に訴えるものが多い。
８０年代を目前にして、「パンク」やら「ニューウェーブ」やらの音楽 ―― 時代を席巻する流れ ―― を支持しながらも…
この、リリカルで女々しい、その極限のような音楽を、当時の私はこよなく愛聴した。
…愛撫する（される）ようなギターやシンセの音をたまらないほど愛した…。
…そして、それに合わせるようなボーカルの官能的な調べがたまらなくいとおしかった…。
キャメル。　年を経て、また、会いたい。切なくも、甘く優しい音楽。
