The Wall is less a collection of songs than a single work, which is sometimes frustrating; the plot lacks enough coherence to hold the snippets of music together. However, there are occasional flashes of brilliance on what ranks as Pink Floyd's most ambitious project. Most of these come from the fully developed songs, which have become classics in their own right. "Hey You," "Mother," and especially "Comfortably Numb" are subtle, incredible pieces of music. Though complex, they move at a relaxed pace, allowing the listener to absorb them slowly; this kind of pacing was something Pink Floyd excelled at. Also worth noting is the "Another Brick in the Wall/The Happiest Days of Our Lives" medley, which has become a staple of rock radio. --Genevieve Williams

80年発表。狂気(The Dark Side of the Moon)と双璧を成す、Pink Floydの傑作コンセプトアルバムです。

ロジャー・ウォーターズ(B)が狂気で全曲の作詞を手掛け、
またそれが批評家や一般リスナーから高く評価されたことにより、バンド内での発言権を強め、
彼が前作アニマルズのツアー中に感じた“古い曲ばかり聴きたがる観客と自分達との間に存在する壁”の原理を深く掘り下げ、
それを主題にした一つの物語(架空のロックスター、ピンクの半生。映像化もされ、賛否はあるが傑作とされている。
また戦争で父親を失って育ったウォーターズ自身の間接的な自伝の意味合いもあるらしい)をアルバム全体を使って進めていくという、
ある種のロックオペラ的な作品です。
そのため非常に彼の色が強く、ギルモア(G)やリック・ライト(Key)の色が抑えられているので、
ファンの間でも賛否が分かれる作品でもあります。
この作品が後年まで、メンバー間に大きな“壁”を築いてしまったのは皮肉的です。
(特にライトはアルバム製作中にウォーターズから正式メンバーを解雇されている)

楽曲の方はというと、狂気や初期の作品に見られたプログレッシブな質感、
浮遊感(エコーや幻想的なシンセの多用)は抑えられ、短くてポップな楽曲が中心となってアルバムを構成しています。
しかしメインテーマのAnother Brick in the Wallの様々なVerを含め、
少年少女合唱隊やオーケストラなどの外部ミュージシャンを多く招いていることもあって、
楽曲は緩やかでテーマに沿った一貫性を保ちながら、非常にバラエティに富んでいます。
実はサウンドの方もよく聴くと非常に綿密に構成されており、
ギターやヴォーカルにかけられたディレイ(山びこのように音が反復するエフェクト)処理も見事で、
正に見事に「建築」された作品です(彼はバンド内でギルモアとライトを“芸術家”、自分とメイスン(Dr)を“建築家”だったと語っている)

アルバム内にはいくつか、物語のキーとも呼べる楽曲も用意され、
Disc.1のMotherやウォーターズとギルモアがアレンジで強烈な衝突を繰り返したとされる、
Disc.2のComfortably Numbは単体で聴いても文句無しの名曲に仕上がっています。
(特に後者のアレンジ、ギターソロは素晴らしいです)
また全編を通してロジャーのヴォーカルの比率が高いのですが、
彼の感情的で鬼気迫るヴォーカルは時に恐ろしく(特に終盤のTrialは声の加工も相まって壮絶)、
時に限りなく哀しげに響き、アルバムの世界に深く引き込まれる要因になっていると思います。

２枚組み、全26曲の大作ではありますが収録時間は実は７０分強と、
１枚の長めアルバムと大して変わらず非常に聞きやすい内容です。
発砲スチロールを積み上げ、ステージ上に巨大な壁を構築したという映像版も含めて、一聴一見の価値があると思います。

(P.S.非常に思い入れが強い作品なので、長くなってしまいすいません…)

　このアルバムのテーマはずばり「壁」。「壁」は、時に「人間は社会の一つの煉瓦にすぎない」という意味で社会を象徴し、時に人間と人間を隔てるどうしようもない存在を象徴するなど、様々なものの象徴として扱われています。またアルバムは「社会に組み込まれていく少年の成長記」というロック・オペラの形式とっています。ある意味平凡なストーリーですが、僕は20年以上聴いて未だに飽きません。魅力ある名盤だと思います。
　飽きないというのは、もちろん音楽が良いからですが、のみならず物語自体が普遍的な問題を内包するからです。10代のころに社会と自分の関係性を自覚し恐怖に怯えるという経験は（少なくとも男性には）通過儀礼のようなものですが、そういう「普遍的な恐怖」を、ロジャーはここで圧倒的迫力をもって描写しえたと思います。
　物語の中で主人公はプライドを引き裂かれ、孤独に耐え、それでも生きていかねばならなりません。そしてやがて正気を失い、自暴自棄になり、自我もろとも崩れていってしまいます。その様子は生々しく、聴く者としては古い経験を突き付けられるようで、苦い痛みを伴うものです。最後の曲はある種の救いかレクイエムのようで、愛する人々が自分を想い困惑している様子が描かれますが、その最後のオトがアルバムの冒頭に続くことが象徴するように、これもまた同じ物語の始まりでしかないことが示唆されます。
　個人的なことですが、僕がこのアルバムを聴いたのは中学生の頃で、丁度社会の恐ろしさを自覚しつつある時期でしたので、受けた衝撃は強く、その後数年に渡ってこのアルバムが明示した（と感じた）世界観に呪縛され続けました。
　大人になってから客観的に聴くとどのように感じたか分かりませんが、それでも十分価値のある作品だっただろうと思っています。

"Animals"のLiveのときにそのコンセプトを得たWatersの全面的な指揮の下、制作された本作"The Wall"(次作"Final Cut"制作時には「独裁」状態に)。とはいっても、Gilmourのペンによる曲もあり、バランスは悪くない。
CD,Live,映画があるが、それぞれWatersのコンセプトを基に実行されたといって良い関係のあるものである。
映画版を観るとCDの内容がより一層理解でき、CDを聞き込むことで、サウンドトラックのように使われている曲の必然性が分かる。
映画版にはCDには収録されていない曲も収録されている。

最近のLiveでもはずせない名曲、"Comfortably Numb","Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2"などを含むアルバムでフロイドの歴史を語る上ではずすことが出来ないポジションのCDである。
コンセプトアルバムということもあり、曲単位で聴くよりは、CDを丸ごと聴くことをオススメしたい。
Genesisの"ブロードウェイ"ほど難解ではないので是非聴いてみて頂きたい。"Dark side of the Moon"を求めると違うかな、という点も。
