人間に失敗はつきものだ。大事なのはそこから何を学び、次にどう生かすかだ――というようなことがよく言われる。だが残念ながら、ある種の物事はやってしまったら、もう取り返しがつかない。“次”などないのだ。聴く者をポジティブな気分にする音楽が蔓延する中、ソニック・ユースが一種埒外の感覚を漂わせるのは、そうした“取り返しのつかなさ”が充満しているからだろう。伸びたゴム、擦り減った奥歯、潰れた眼球、千切れた腕……どの曲からも、朽ち果てるのを待つ廃人のような感覚が立ち上る。スタジオでのジャム・セッションをそのまま収めたかのような延々と循環するファンダメンタル。その長いループが少しずつ変奏し、さまざまな音のパッチが混入する。ただ調子はあくまでも緩んだままだ。静寂の中ですべては起きる。二度と元通リにならない恐れを伴って……。チーマーも援助交際するコギャルも、すぐに“社会復帰”して、何もなかったような顔をする日本では、この手の厳しさが一番欠けていると思う。 (広瀬陽一) --- 1998年05月号
