Multitalented Brazilian musician Jobim's talent was revealed to a larger world in 1959 by his and Luis Bonfa's score for the film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) in 1959. Songs such as "A Felicidade" and "Desafinado" generated the bossa nova movement of the early '60s that inspired the likes of Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, and Miles Davis. This 1967 album features Jobim sharing vocals with Sinatra on "The Girl from Ipanema" and "How Insensitive." Three standards--"Change Partners" by Irving Berlin; "I Concentrate on You" by Cole Porter; and Robert Wright, George Forrest, and Alexander Borodin's "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads"--round out the program of seven Jobim tunes. This is a lovely taste of Latin melody and rhythm from two masters of relaxed swing. --Stanley Booth

このアルバムはシナトラがボサノバはスタンダード・ナンバーにも成り得るし、そしてスタンダード・ナンバーもボサノバになると言う事を証明したアルバムだった

シナトラ、ジョビン、そしてアレンジャーのクラウス・オガ-マンの３人の結晶が、このアルバムを歴史に残る名アルバムにした

ジョビン作の「イパネマの娘」は、このアルバム発表前の１９６４年に全米チャート５位まで上がる大ヒット曲となっていたが、シナトラが歌う事によって、この曲も真のスタンダード・ナンバーとなったのだ！

この素晴らしい楽曲を、シナトラの洒落た歌い方と共にジョビンの右腕とも言えるアレンジャーのオガ-マンのアレンジにより尚一層素晴らしい曲に仕立て上げている

アーヴィング・バーリン作の「チェンジ・パートナーズ」、コール・ポーター作の「アイ・コンセントレート・オン・ユー」、この二つのスタンダード・ナンバーをボサノバ・アレンジにしてシナトラが歌う事で改めてボサノバのリズムはスタンダードにも合うと言う事を証明し、ミュージカル「キスメット」の中の楽曲「輝く腕輪とビーズ玉」をボサノバ・アレンジでシナトラが歌う事によって、改めてこの曲はボサノバ・アレンジが一番良く似合う曲と思い知らせる事になった　このアルバムの中でもこの「輝く腕輪とビーズ玉」の出来が一番素晴らしい！

このアルバムが世に出る前にサラ・ボーンがボサノバを取り上げたアルバムを発表し、アストラッド・ジルベルトがスタンダード・ナンバーをボサノバにアレンジしたアルバムを発表していたが、ボサノバ・ブームも落ち着いた頃に改めてシナトラがボサノバを取り上げた事によって、ボサノバがジャズだけじゃなくスタンダードとしても認知されるようになったのだ

今はそのシナトラもジョビンもいない・・・

このアルバムは歴史に名を残す偉大な二人のアーティストを結び付けたアルバムであると共に、間違いなく時代のエポックメイキングになったアルバムでもある

ブラジルが生んだ現代最高の作曲家トム・ジョビンの数少ない＜真の理解者＞が、シナトラである。その出会いは、バールで友達と歓談中のジョビンの元へ、まだ彼に会ったこともないシナトラ本人が電話でレコーディングを依頼して来た事にはじまる。実はボサノヴァとシナトラの縁はとても深い。リオで最初にボサノヴァを築き上げた人々の多くは、シナトラ・ファンクラブのメンバーだったし、ジョビン自身も、（まだ彼と知り合ってもいない）無名時代の若年期から彼との共演を念頭に置いているかの如き発言をしていた。＜素直な心をそのまま表現する＞という基本精神において共感し合える部分が多かったのであろう。熱く語りかける歌唱スタイルが通常メインのシナトラも、このアルバムでは”サラッと、空白の間を大切に、小出しな歌い方”でボサノヴィスタしている。

ジョビンはむちゃくちゃ好きです。シナトラも好きです。どちらのアルバムもうっとりしながら聴きほれます。だけど二人が組むことには一抹の不安があったのですが、皆さんいいとおっしゃるので買ってみました。
…お叱りを覚悟で敢えて言わせて頂くと、いやな予感適中、という感じです。どちらもあまり楽しそうに聞こえないのです。かといって丁々発止のやりとりがあるわけでもなく、社交辞令のまま終わってしまった会話のような印象。特にシナトラにつらさを覚えました。I concentrate on youやBaubles,bangles and beadsではやや和んで聴こえるのですが、やはり手の中にある曲は寛いで歌えたということでしょうか。ジョビンもシナトラもラテン系だからうまく融合したのでは、という説をどこかで見かけましたが、私にはとてもそうは思えませんでした。
でもとにかくどちらも好きなので、かなり甘めの☆３つです。勉強にはなりましたし。みたらし団子とチョコレートムースを同時に食べなくとも、どちらもおいしいですものね。（めちゃくちゃ変な例えですみません。どちらがどちらということでは全くないので、念のため。）…それにしても、やっぱり何か変、と感じた方は他にはあまりいらっしゃらないのでしょうか。そもそも大好きなのに、この両大御所に☆３つをつけるのは、個人的にも世間的にもすごくつらいものがあります。
