GARY NUMAN名義として初のソロ作品。この作品以前はTUBEWAY ARMYとして本名GARY WEBBとして今は亡き彼の盟友ベーシストPAUL GARDENERと共にヒットナンバーを既に送りだしていました。
NUMANと言う名前は電話帳でNEWMANと言う名前を見て気にいったそうで造語＆見た目的にNUMANにしたそうです。（TUBEWAY ARMYのREPLICASも本作同様に重要な作品）。ギターを一切使用せずの初のシンセメインの作品を実験的に試みたと言う彼の最高傑作とは言うまでも無く。本作リリース時期の彼のミュージシャンのメンツにJOHN FOXX脱退後VIENNAで大ヒット直前のULTRA VOX のメンバーを加えている点がユニーク。UKでの彼の人気は作品の売れ行きのみならずツアー共々凄いものでした。TUBEWAY ARMYの２作品と本作３作全てを同時に！チャートインさせると言う程でした。UKでは＝今でも＝熱狂的なフォロアーがいます。あのBECKも！彼に大影響されたミュージシャンのひとり。本作は説明不要の名曲中の名曲揃い＋リマスターのCDにはエクストラトラックとしてシングルのB面に含まれていた今となっては入手困難なナンバーもずらりと含まれていますので贅沢過ぎる？お買得な商品です。８０sのUKテクノブームの火付け役的な作品でまだ聴いた事が無いテクノファンは聴くべし＆聴いて勉強するべし。現在の様に機材が安く御手軽で無かった時代に懸命にムーグ数台で分厚いアンサンブルを奏でると言う手法はミニマルな機材でマックスの効果を得ると言う点で今でも非常に参考になる作品でも有ります。KRAFTWERKの豪華なイメージと違いシンセと言う機材をより庶民的に身近に感じさせてくれた彼がいたからこそ、そしてこの作品を造ったからこそ今現在の様にシンセが普及したと思うのは私だけでしょうか。世界中のシンセメーカーは彼に深く感謝すべき？です。JAMES BROWNがゴッドファーザー　オブ　ソウルならGARY NUMANこそがゴッド　ファーザー
オブ　テクノです！。やはり今でもPLEASURE PRINCIPLEを聴く都度そう感じさせられますね（笑）。もしあなたが自称テクノファンと名乗るのであればGARY NUMANのせめて本作ぐらいはコレクションに有るべき！。 KRAFTWERKのCOMPUTER WORLDと同様に重要なテクノブループリント的な１枚なのですから！。

テクノポップ初期の最大の成功者であり、レッドツエッペリンのチャート１位をこのアルバムで破って１位となり、新時代の到来を強烈に印象付けた作品。
一般的にテクノエレポップとしてカテゴライズされているが、ドラムは打ち込みではないし、シンセもモノトーンを強調したサウンドで一般的なテクノエレポップを期待して聞くとその生バンド感にガッカリするだろう。ただその独特のモノトーンの単調なシンセとゲイリーの甲高いボーカルは強烈な個性ではある。
はっきり言って曲のパターンが殆ど同じなので、アルバム１枚聴けば十分かなという気がする。ゲイリーの代表アルバムと言うと何故かこのアルバムが上げられるが、前作の「レプリカ」の方がシングル曲が充実しており、そちらの方がお勧めだ.

全米No.1に輝いた「 CARS 」も収められている彼の最高傑作。ニュー・ロマンティック系では'80年代当時一番成功したのではないでしょうか!? MOOG(シンセサイザー)の独特なんだけども、いかにも当時のニューロマ系のチープな音が今聞くと逆に新鮮でかっこいい。あまり再評価されることがなかったけど最近ではクラブでちらほらPLAYされてる模様。TECHNO系、HOUSE系が好きな方にもオススメ！
