With Adore, Smashing Pumpkins return to the forefront of rock to do a dance with a new partner. Trading white-noise vocals and guitars for caramel crooning and dense synthesizers, frontman Billy Corgan drives bandmates James Iha and D'Arcy to a lush aural plateau. The darkness is still there--evidenced in the techno throb of the single "Ava Adore"--but the Pumpkins also tinker with Lennonesque lullabyes ("Behold! The Night Mare"), midtempo electronica ("Appels and Oranjes"), and tender calliope music ("Once Upon a Time"). Smartly, Corgan rarely upstages the watery sounds going on behind him; the trademark midsong blowouts are almost completely absent. 　「メロンコリー…」より、全世界で売り上げが落ち込む中、ただ一つ日本だけが、全作を上回るセールスを見せた作品。つまりこの作品は特に日本人好みなわけ。沈んだ沈鬱な作調だし、ここの作品にはそれほど際立つインバクトがない。ところが、全作品中、最も統一された雰囲気のアルバムなのである。実際私も、ベストの曲はこのアルバムからは見出しがたいが、アルバムとしてはこれをベストに選びたいのだ。ジミー・チェンバレンの不在ゆえ、この作品はビリー・コーガンのソロ・アルバムといっていいかもしれない。バンドのダイナミズムを失った分、ビリーの暗闇がストレートに反映されたのかもしれない。

オリジナルアルバムとしては４枚目。アメリカのみならず全世界で大ヒットした前作がありながらも、トラブルからサウンドの要であったドラマーの脱退というアクシデントを乗り越えて作成されたアルバム。ギター・ベース・ドラムという既成のロックフォーマットの枠から解き放たれたビリー・コーガンのクリエーターとしての懐の深さを思い知らされる。 For Martha や Blank Page、そして Behold The Nightmare など名曲が揃う、大人のための良質なロックミュージック。

いつものような激しい曲があまり入っていない為、アメリカでは売れ行きは不調だったそうです。
しかし、日本では結構売れましたし、私はこのアルバムが大好きです。
唯一ドラムのジミーがトラブルで脱退してしまい全曲ドラムは打ち込みとなってしまったのが残念です。

大人のロックアルバムという感じで、いつもとはまた少し違ったスマパンが聴けてお勧めです。
