　NUCLEAR BLAST レーベルが制作した DEATH/GOTHIC系コンピレイションCD。TYPE O NEGATIVE、MOONSPELL、THE GATHERING、TIAMAT など、なかなかのビッグネームがレコード会社の垣根を越えて参加している。このCDが発売された当時の新曲、レア曲を多く収録、地味なジャケットとは裏腹になかなかクオリティの高い作品だ。

　このCDの一番の目玉は、THE GATHERING の 「When the Sun Hits」 である。筆者もこの曲目当てでこのCDを購入した。「When the Sun Hits」 は SLOWDIVE （その後 Mojave3 に改名） というバンドのカヴァーで、シングル 「KEVIN'S TELESCOPE」 のB面に収録されていたアルバム未収録曲である。シングルはごく少量しかプレスされておらず、特に日本には殆ど入ってこなかったため、持っているファンが非常に少ない。筆者も手に入れ損なった１人で、このCDを見つけた時は狂喜した。 　オリジナルは男性ヴォーカルがリードだが、THE GATHERING のヴォーカル、アネク・ヴァン・ガースバーゲンは女性であるため、オルタナ色が強かった元曲よりも透明感のある仕上がりになっている。普段の THE GATHERING はヘヴィなギター・リフに伸びのある女性ヴォーカルが載る独特のゴシック・サウンドで知られるが、この曲に関してはより歌重視のハード・ロックといった所だ。

　もう一つの目玉はやはり TYPE O NEGATIVE の 「Wolf Moon」 だろう。アルバムでは連続演奏になっていて、前後の曲と繋がっているが、ここでは単品で聴くことができる。私が知る限り、この曲の単品ヴァージョンが収録されたCDは他になく、その意味で非常にレアである。 　アルバム 「OCTOBER RUST」 では、代表曲 「Love You To Death」 や、キャッチーな 「My Girlfriend's Girlfriend」 に隠れて地味な存在だったが、こうして独立して聴いてみるとなかなかの佳曲で、持っていて損はないと思う。
