　ヨーロッパでは累計800万枚を売り上げたMARILLIONだが、叙情的なサウンドゆえ、アメリカでは依然無名に留まっていた。アメリカでも成功を！とEMIがハッパをかけ、制作されたのが通算6作目の『HOLIDAYS IN EDEN』（＝本作）である。「Cover My Eyes(Pain&Heaven)」、「No One Can」、「Dry Land」の3大ポップ曲をシングルに据え、欧州盤と米盤では内容を変えてのリリースである。結果は、ご存じの通り。欧州では前作同様ヒットし、アメリカでは全く火が付かなかった。
　シングル曲の完成度に問題があった訳ではない。欧州的になったJOURNEYという感じで、プログレ・ハードとしては申し分の無い作品だった。しかしやはり、詩的な歌詞＋淡い旋律のロックでは、荒っぽい曲が全盛のアメリカでは無理だったのだろう。後日、「言う通りにすれば絶対アメリカでヒットさせるから」って言われたんだぜ！とホガース(vo)が批判したのは有名な話。この反動が、壮大なコンセプト作『BRAVE』に結びついていくのだ。

　それはそうと、徹底してポップに専念した楽曲は覚えやすく、主戦場である欧州では好評だった。欧州盤はドラマティックな「Splintering Heart/痛む心」を1曲目に配置。米盤より叙情性重視の曲順にしたのも功を奏した様だ。「Splintering...」と並んで人気のタイトル曲「Holidays In Eden」も大作だが、銀の翼に乗って休暇旅行に出掛けるシーンを歌っており、やっぱりアメリカ市場が視野に入っている…。
　ちなみに本パッケージは、期間限定の2CD。シングルB面やデモを多数収録し、24ビット・デジタル・リマスターが施されている。曲順は欧州盤を踏襲。尚、裏表紙にアメリカ盤ジャケットも同梱。しかも、好きな方を表に出来る様、上下が倒立して印刷されている。

新ボーカリストのスティーヴ・ホガース加入後２作目となる作品に未発表曲満載のボーナスディスクがついてリマスター再発売されたもの。

ホガースの柔らかで歌心のあるスタイルはマリリオンに革新的な変化をもたらした。より幅広い音楽性への多様なチャレンジを可能にしたのだ。結果としてキャッチーなサウンドが台頭、完全にポンプロックの幻影を一掃した印象がある。「Cover My Eyes」「No One Can」など何度聴いてもキャッチーで良い曲だ。

ボーナスディスクはデモ音源なども含まれていて、豪華なブックレットも併せて当時の製作過程を検証することも出来る仕掛けになっている。

８９年発表。ネオ・プログレッシブやらポンプ・ロックと言われたムーヴメントの旗手的役割を担っていたのがこのグループだった。ジェネシスのフォロワーではあったものの、独特のクセ・・・と言うよりもアクのようなものがあってそれに慣れるとクセになるグループだったのだが、そのクセの源のシンガー、フィッシュが前々作で脱退。本作は新しいシンガーを迎えての２作目となる。このシンガー、スティーヴ・ホガースが、このグループに劇的な変化をもたらし、本作でこのグループを見切った人も多かったかもしれないが、私自身は本作をきっかけにマリリオンにハマっていった。ジェネシスとは一味違った微妙にアメリカナイズされた音はなかなか甘美な響きであり、未だにこの作品を聞くことはかなり多い。
１．は従来通りの曲であり、唐突にスティーヴ・ロザリーの官能的なギターが飛び出すあたりはニヤリとさせてくれる。しかし２．ではモロにＵ２のディレイを生かしたギターが登場する。ロザリーの芸達者ぶりには驚くが、この激ポップぶりにはおそらく従来のファンは激怒しただろうと思う。しかし従来の雰囲気もちゃんと残っているから凄い。プログレッシヴとは言い難い作品だが、美しい世界観を持った作品であり、例のギター・ソロも十分に満喫出来る、なかなかバランスのとれた良作だと思う。
美しいジャケットも魅力的であり、真冬の森のようなイメージはこの作品にピッタリ。
