天才プリンスのこってりファンクアルバムな一枚。
確かに、プリンスというアーティスト自体ファンクだけでは
語れないのも事実ですが、根底にあるものはやはりファンク。
演奏は勿論、プリンスのギターサウンドは相変わらずファンキー
でタイトで言う事なし、ギタリストとしてあまり有名ではないのが
不思議なぐらいです。プリンスのアルバムを買ってファンキーな
曲ばっかり聞きたい！という人にオススメ。
ある意味では最も素のプリンスなのかもしれません。
ファンクという点では星５つですが、プリンスとしては星４つかな？

1992年作。80年代のプリンスは1作ごとに作風を変化させてきましたが、本作は前作のフォーマットをまんま使用した延長線上的(悪く言うと2番煎じ)な作品となりました。
バンドはロージー･ゲインズが抜けてマイテが加入。ロージーの脱退はバンドに大きな損失になるかと思いきや、それほどでもなく、前作「D&P」と余り変らない感じです。
サウンドは、前作が60年代だとしたら本作は70年代リバイバル。ジャケットはEW&Fちっくで、モロJB、モロP-Funk、モロQueen、レゲエ風、ボサノバ風といった多様なスタイル、そしてホーン隊の大活躍がポイント。UKテクノにも果敢に挑戦していますがこれは失敗。そもそも80年代のプリンスサウンド自体がテクノの一角を担っていたはずですが、90年代は無理にジュリアナ的なテクノを狙い「流行についていこうとしているオジサン」的な哀しさが漂っています。orz
1曲の中でアレンジがコロコロ変化する曲が多いのですが、大げさな展開をする割には肩透かしで、いろんな要素がうまく溶けずにセパレートされている感じがします。そんな中でも「Love 2 The 9's」は個人的に本作のベストトラックです。
前作から引き続きミキシングを100％外注しており、スタジアム的大味な音になっています。これが並のミュージシャンならば問題ないのですが、プリンスの場合、つい過去の作品のシャープなミキシングと比べてしまい、「もっさり」と感じてしまいます。プリンスであるが故の不幸であります(涙)。
本作リリース当時「殿下 契約金1億ドル、ワーナーの副社長就任」との仰天ニュースが流れ、その数ヵ月後には「副社長辞退、改名、引退」とさらに仰天させられましたが、そんな混乱が複雑なアレンジに表れている素直さが微笑ましかったりします。(^-^)

　<1>の冒頭の歌詞――"My name is Prince, and I'm a funky!"
　それはワーナーに対しての反逆の叫びでもあるのだろうが、まさにこのアルバムそのものを表わしてもいる。
　こってり、ねっとりとしたプリンス的なファンクロックに包まれるアルバムです。
　まぁ、ちょっとこってり過ぎて食傷気味になるかも。前作と足して二で割ったらよかったかも。

　もう一曲くらいキレイ目なバラードとかあるといい感じだったかな。
