   エディ・ゴメス（B）は66年にビル・エヴァンス・トリオに参加。彼はエヴァンスとラファロが築き上げたスタイルをきっちり踏襲し、以後11年の長きにわたってエヴァンスの女房役をつとめる。ドラムスは、現代ジャズ界最高のドラマーであるジャック・デジョネット。エヴァンスより15歳ほど年下の、若手2人は本盤録音時点ではまだまだ無名。後にコンテンポラリー・ジャズ界を背負って立つ2人のはつらつとしたプレイと、それに刺激されいつになく力強いタッチのエヴァンス。
   さらに、世界有数のジャズ・フェスティヴァルでのライヴという付加価値が加わり、稀にみる名演が生まれた。ハイライトは愛奏曲<4>で、生涯で最もパワフルな演奏になっている。多くの名作ライヴ盤を生んだ同フェスティヴァル、その最初の名盤。ジャケット写真に写るのは、会場のすぐ近く、スイス・レマン湖のほとりに建つ古城。本作は「お城のエヴァンス」としてファンに親しまれる。（高木宏真）

１９６８年録音のライブだが、クリアーで臨場感あふれる録音のため、オーディオ・チェック用に聴いている人も多いと思う。

音数の多いエディ・ゴメス＋ジャック・ディジョネットのリズム対エヴァンスの対決といった様相を呈しているアルバムで、息を呑むようなその緊張感はオープニング曲、"One For Helen"の第一音から始まっている。疾走感を伴ったエヴァンスのピアノにゴメスのベースが絡みつき、ディジョネットのシンバルがあおっていく。同曲は、６６年の『Bill Evans at Town Hall』のボーナス・トラックとしても収録されているので、比較すると面白い。（Chuck Israels(b)、Arnold Wise(ds)）。

"Embraceable You"ではゴメスの饒舌なベースが堪能できる。このアルバムを初めて聴いた当時は、技巧のひけらかしが鼻につくような気がしていたが、今改めて聴くと、悪くない。聴き慣れたせいかもしれない。

つい身を乗り出して聴いてしまうほどテンションの高いエヴァンスも、物思いにふけりながら聴くエヴァンスと同様、いいものだ、と思う。

まず驚かされるのが、録音状態の良さである。べ-スのゴリゴリ感に圧倒され、シンバルの繊細さにお尻が浮立ち、エヴァンスのピアノに体が揺れてくる。目を閉じて、ボリュウ-ムを上げれば、モントル-城にあなた自身がいるはず。
